The series of papers collected in this volume may be considered as a compliment or commentary to my "Essay on Classification", since I have endeavored to present here in a more popular form the views first expressed in that work. And although the direct intention of these pages has been, as their title indicates, to give some general hints to young students as to the methods by which scientific truth has been reached, including a general sketch of the history of science in past times, yet I have also wished to avail myself of this opportunity to enter my earnest protest against the transmutation theory, revived of late with so much ability, and so generally received. Axiological Illnesses
Axiology can be summarised as the branch of philosophy which studies the nature of value and values. In this collection, Professor Nicolae Râmbu addresses axiology through the lens of ‘illnesses’ – drawing on philosophical works from Kant, Nietzsche, Hildebrand, and Fichte; and the literature of Dostoevsky, Goethe, Shakespeare and Machiavelli, amongst many others. Politics of Art
In Politics of Art Zhiguang Yin investigates members of the Creation Society and their social network while in Japan. The study contextualises the Chinese left-wing intellectual movements and their political engagements in relation with the early 20th century international political events and trends in both East Asia and Europe. The Creation Society was largely viewed as a subject of literary studies. This research, however, evaluates these intellectuals in the context of Chinese revolution and elaborates their theoretical contribution to the Chinese Communist Party’s practice of “theoretical struggle” as a main driving force of ideological construction. As this study tries to demonstrate, theoretical struggle drives the ideological politics forward while maintaining its political vigour.
