El segle XX va ser, sens dubte, el de les revolucions, i en especial el de la revolució russa. A partir del 1917, els esdeveniments que van tenir lloc a l’antic imperi tsarista van traspassar fronteres i van sacsejar els fonaments de tota mena de societats, independentment de la identitat nacional, el credo religiós, l’estructura econòmica i la forma política. Els fets d’octubre van servir tant de model com de fantasma per combatre, inspirant i encoratjant els conflictes, les reformes, les revolucions i les contrarevolucions del curt segle XX.
