Smooth Operator

From a humble background in Barry, where his father was a butcher and local politician in the formative years of the new town, Cyril Lakin studied at Oxford, survived the First World War, and went on to become a Fleet Street editor, radio presenter and war-time member of parliament. As literary editor of both the Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Times, Lakin was at the centre of a vibrant and radical generation of writers, poets and critics, many of whom he recruited as reviewers. He gained a parliamentary seat and served in the National Government during World War II. The different worlds he inhabited, from Wales to Westminster, and across class, profession and party, were facilitated by his relaxed disposition, convivial company, and ability to cultivate influential contacts. An effective talent-spotter and catalyst for new projects, he preferred pragmatism over ideology and non-partisanship in politics: a moderate Conservative for modern times.

I asked 70 strangers, 'Please give me a piece of life advice.' I used their responses as inspiration to write my next poem. This poetry collection is the result. The youngest stranger I asked was six years old. The oldest stranger was eighty-something. Some were asked in the queue at the supermarket or the post office. One time I asked the waiter at a restaurant. I also asked Joanne, who was trying to sell me car insurance over the phone. My favourite? It's hard to choose. "Don't tie your shoelace in a revolving door" said by a chap called Russell was a corker. "Spend time with the people you love" said Nicole, aged nine, on a particular day when I was feeling alone, really pulled on my hear...

"I believe..". These are the initial two words of the Apostles' Creed, which originated around the third century. I would like to begin with these two forceful words. I believe that change can be effected without armed force and without hate speech, but solely through a revolution of the heart. But most of all I believe in God and in the Roman Catholic Church. Faith in God is not something spectacular, but neither something ordinary in our pluralistic Western world... Jacqueline Straub was born in 1990 in Sigmaringen in the south of Germany (Baden-WUrttemberg). Her path of faith began at the age of fifteen when she was with a school friend at a Christian youth camp. Since then, Jacqueline describes feeling in her heart a vocation, the calling of becoming a roman catholic priest. Through pilgrimages to Rome, Assisi, TaizE and Jerusalem Jacqueline's faith in God and in the Church, grew and strengthened. Since her first sense of calling to become a priest, she has striven to help develop a new courage in faith and to be a part of an ever-growing movement to reinvigorate the roman catholic Church.

Dear Reader, This book is all about me and the cruel world that I inhabit. Ever since the reception class, I've stood out. I'd like to think this was because I am exceptionally funny, clever and stylish, but others say that it's down to my CRAZY hair and big mouth. Whatever it is, I am definitely not to blame. A LOT of people are jealous of me and that is why going to high school will be brilliant. I will meet much better people there who don't wear pink leg warmers and glitter. If it wasn't for my best friend Frances and my she-hamster, Trevor, I don't know how I'd put up with the madness. Frances gets me, even if she still wants to play princesses-get-chased-by-witch, and that's a lot more than I can say for my stupid parents who insist on ruining my life with their stupid feuds. If only I can stop being such a loser whenever Milo Costigan is around, perhaps it'll all work out okay... See you on the other side, Ginger Mclean

From Riches to Rags

Geoff Hill's autobiography describes his rise from the back streets of Brierley Hill during the 1930s to the running of a successful Black Country business, and then back to rags again - or the rag trade - when he founded a chain of charity shops. In between were his stints as a gnome vendor, champion cyclist, pub landlord and encyclopaedia salesman. Geoff Hill was born in 1927 in Brierley Hill. He easily obtained a scholarship to King Edward VI School in Stourbridge, but had to leave at the age of fifteen in order to contribute to the family income. Geoff's passion for cycling led him to take a job in a bicycle shop, and to semi-professional cycling: at the age of seventeen he became the Br...
