Packaging in the Environment

Concern about the harm that industrial activities may cause the environ ment, means that all are now being scrutinised to assess their impact. Packaging is no exception. It is now high on the political agenda, in terms of the environmental issues which are targeted for immediate attention in industrially developed countries and is often perceived as a wasteful drain on non-sustainable resources and an unnecessary indulgence on the part of affluent societies. This book seeks to understand and respond to the variety of pressures packaging now faces, and to review and correct the many misconceptions that exist in relation to its environmental impacts. It has been structured to address the topic...

The supermarket conundrum "Paper or plastic?” sums up a Western consumer society that is on a collision course with the planet’s life-support systems. Do we clearcut forests, process pulp, and bleach it with chlorine to make paper bags? Or do we make a pact with demon hydrocarbon, refining ancient sunlight into handy plastics? About half of America’s municipal solid waste is packaging--at least 300 pounds per person each year--and its "upstream” costs in energy and resources are even more alarming. In this fascinating look at the world of packaging, author Daniel Imhoff delves into the life cycles of packaging materials, from wood products to glass, metals, and plastics, and looks at...

A Match for Doctor Koekentapp

And now for something completely different on the South African book scene: a slapstick Jewish comedy set in the Joburg northern suburbs. GP Dr Koekentapp is called to the Levy home to attend to a Mr Levy's kidney stone. Mrs Levy sets her eyes on the young doctor, spots the perfect marriage material for her daughter Sylvia and is delighted when the two of them are immediately attracted. But to her horror, Mrs Levy discovers that Dr Koekentapp is not Jewish. The tale complicates, involves her scheming and plotting to convert him to Judaism (witness the scene where he is circumsised to the accompaniment of a Scottish pipe band), the bizarre roles played by her family and friends to achieve this end, and the frenetic interference and bewildering hitches in his life and medical practice. Broadly funny and ribald comedy that delights in lewd word plays and allusions in which goy and Jewry alike will find common purpose. Is this another Tom Sharpe?
