The Truth of the Technological World
Twenty-three essays that document the intellectual itinerary of the philosopher and cultural historian, one of the most original thinkers in recent times. Friedrich Kittler (1943–2011) combined the study of literature, cinema, technology, and philosophy in a manner sufficiently novel to be recognized as a new field of academic endeavor in his native Germany. “Media studies,” as Kittler conceived it, meant reflecting on how books operate as films, poetry as computer science, and music as military equipment. This volume collects writings from all stages of the author’s prolific career. Exemplary essays illustrate how matters of form and inscription make heterogeneous source material (e.g., literary classics and computer design) interchangeable on the level of function—with far-reaching consequences for our understanding of the humanities and the “hard sciences.” Rich in counterintuitive propositions, sly humor, and vast erudition, Kittler’s work both challenges the assumptions of positivistic cultural history and exposes the over-abstraction and language games of philosophers such as Heidegger and Derrida.
East Central European Art Histories and Austria
The specific role of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the later nation of Austria within the formation of regional art histories in East Central Europe has received little attention in art historical research so far. Taking into account the era of the Dual Monarchy as well as the period after 1989, the contributions analyze and critically scrutinize the imperial legacies, transnational transfer processes and cultural hierarchies in art historiographies, artistic practices and institutional histories. Consisting of 17 texts, with new commissions and one reprint, case studies, monographic essays and interviews grouped thematically into two sections, the anthology proposes a pluriversal narrative on regional, cultural and political contexts.
Paul Neagu
The first monograph on the influential Romanian artist and teacher This is the first comprehensive monograph on the Romanian-born, UK-based artist Paul Neagu (1938-2004), whose oeuvre transcends traditional artistic disciplines, and who was for several decades an important source of inspiration for young artists, curators and intellectuals. Neagu's philosophical approach led him to push the boundaries of the Western abstract tradition, which he first discovered clandestinely in Communist Romania. He continued to explore abstraction after relocating to London in 1971, where he became an influential teacher at the Slade, Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College (among his students were Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor and Rachel Whiteread). Neagu's practice included performance, sculpture, drawing, painting, video, photography and poetry. He often promoted physical engagement with his more tactile works, underlining one of his enduring aims: to refute what he perceived as the primacy of visuality in art.
