East Central European Art Histories and Austria
The specific role of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the later nation of Austria within the formation of regional art histories in East Central Europe has received little attention in art historical research so far. Taking into account the era of the Dual Monarchy as well as the period after 1989, the contributions analyze and critically scrutinize the imperial legacies, transnational transfer processes and cultural hierarchies in art historiographies, artistic practices and institutional histories. Consisting of 17 texts, with new commissions and one reprint, case studies, monographic essays and interviews grouped thematically into two sections, the anthology proposes a pluriversal narrative on regional, cultural and political contexts.
Rethinking Postwar Europe
The book "Rethinking Postwar Europe" offers an in-depth insight into the largely unexplored topic of artistic practices in the 1940s and 1950s in Europe which until recently had been obscured by ideologies of the Cold War. Thanks to the authors' diverse methodological backgrounds, the volume presents – for the first time – a comprehensive multilayered narrative, focusing on the complexities and entanglements in the artistic field. Instead of assessing the postwar period in the traditional way as divided by the Iron Curtain, the contributions investigate processes of contact, interaction, dissemination, overlapping, and networking. Consequently, the analysis of a diversified European modernism in both its aesthetic and its socio-political dimension resonates with all the different case studies. In particular, the volume looks at how artists developed, designed and (re)negotiated identities and discourses, and sheds new light on the power of art – and creative powers in general – in a postwar setting of mutilations, losses, and devastations.
Taking the Alhambra to St. Petersburg
Ein wenig bekanntes Phänomen innerhalb des sogenannten Maurischen Revivals ist die intensive Auseinandersetzung russischer Architekten mit der ibero-islamischen Architektur, insbesondere mit den mittelalterlichen Nasridenpalästen der Alhambra in Granada. Die materialreiche Studie analysiert orientalisierende Bauwerke und Interieurs des 19. Jahrhunderts in St. Petersburg und zeichnet die Transferwege nach, über die das Formenvokabular der Alhambra von Spanien nach Russland gelangte. Sie bezieht wesentliche Aspekte der russischen Kulturgeschichte und der europäischen Orient-Vorstellungen des 19. Can Art History be Made Global?
The book responds to the challenge of the global turn in the humanities from the perspective of art history. A global art history, it argues, need not follow the logic of economic globalization nor seek to bring the entire world into its fold. Untersuchungen zu den mannigfaltigen Westprojektionen und -reflexionen bis in die Gegenwart stellen jedoch ein Forschungsdesiderat dar. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes fragen: Unter welchen historischen und geopolitischen Bedingungen formt sich ein okzidentales Kultur- und Kunstbewusstsein aus? Welche Ab- und Ausgrenzungsmechanismen spielen dabei eine Rolle? Im Zentrum der Analyse steht eine kritische Okzidentalismusreflexion und deren Beeinflussung durch die geopolitische Deplatzierung und Zersplitterung des Westens.
