In this auto-ethnography, which is a contribution to a form of writing only recently adopted by historians, the author provides an exposition of how, since 1957, he has been located in education currents flowing through various exotic lands. He addresses how, in participating in that flow, he has been influenced by historical events in which he participated, along with broader societal events reaching back over 150 years. As such, this book is illuminative on education developments in education in Ireland and internationally over the last 70 years in relation to a longer time-scale. It commences with an account of the author’s early life and schooling in County Waterford, Ireland, addresses his undergraduate years in London and Limerick, and reflects on 13 years of school teaching and studying for postgraduate degrees at Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. An account of the author’s life and academic work in Papua New Guinea, Australia, Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Malaysia then follows.
Politics in Ireland is the first major text to provide an accessible and systematic analysis of the politics of Ireland: North as well as South. With the development of a new Northern Irish political system and increasing links across the island, the authors argue that the time is ripe to study together the two polities, which share so much of a common history but which have had very different evolutions through the 20th century. This edited book explores the origins and evolution of the early childhood education and care (ECEC) system on the island of Ireland since the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1921. While the book acknowledges and celebrates the role of parents in caring for and educating their young children within the home, the key focus is on the provisions outside the home for children from birth to six years. It critiques the historical and contemporary provision under a number of key themes including curriculum, the policy and legislative landscapes, inspection and regulation, Irish language provision and professionalisation. Written by key experts and actors from the sector, it makes a unique contribution to the existing literature by bringing together in one collection a critical analysis of the key themes relating to the development of ECEC in Ireland. The Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale - Extension (ECERS-E) has been developed by Kathy Sylva, Iram Sraj-Batchford and Brenda Taggart as an instrument to measure quality in literacy, numeracy, science and diversity, as observable in pre-school settings. The scales are in accord with the United Kingdom1s Foundation Stage Curriculum. ECERS-E complements the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scales-Revised (ECERS-R), an internationally recognised measure of quality in education and care. Although originally devised as a research tool, the scales have been used by early years practitioners during self audits to determine quality of provision.
