From practical discussions related to specific texts, to more theoretical discussions about pedagogical practice regarding issues of nationalism and identity, Home-Work constitutes a major investigation and reassessment of the influence of postcolonial theory on Canadian literary pedagogy from some of the top scholars in the field.
Peripheral Fear
This is a pioneering work published here for the first time in its complete form. At a time when Gothic studies still concentrated on traditional European and American Gothic, the author laid the foundations for the exploration of how Gothic conventions were transported and transformed in places remote from Europe. Through a detailed reading of 19th- and 20th-century examples of Canadian and Australian Gothic fiction, this work demonstrates the transformative potential of a once much-maligned mode in what were arguably neglected national literatures.

One of the most famous shipwreck sagas of the 19th century took place on the tropical coast of north-east Australia. In 1836 the Stirling Castle was wrecked off the Queensland coast and many of the crew, together with the captain's wife, Eliza Fraser, were marooned on Fraser Island.
