Discourse on the State of the Jews

In 1638, a small book of no more than 92 pages in octavo was published “appresso Gioanne Calleoni” under the title “Discourse on the State of the Jews and in particular those dwelling in the illustrious city of Venice.” It was dedicated to the Doge of Venice and his counsellors, who are labelled “lovers of Truth.” The author of the book was a certain Simone (Simḥa) Luzzatto, a native of Venice, where he lived and died, serving as rabbi for over fifty years during the course of the seventeenth century. Luzzatto’s political thesis is simple and, at the same time, temerarious, if not revolutionary: Venice can put an end to its political decline, he argues, by offering the Jews a...

The effects of climate change, rapid urbanization, and aging infrastructure challenge water policymakers to confront a radical paradigm shift in water resources utilization. Recent advances in sensing, networking, processing, and control have provided the means for sustainable solutions in water management, and their implementation in water infrastructures is collectively referred to as "smart water grids." Smart water grids depend upon cyber-physical system principles to effectively respond to issues regarding the scalability and reliability of dynamic and inaccessible environments. As such, unique smart water grid issues associated with front-end signal processing, communication, control, ...

"This book provides an in-depth guide to the Maynooth medieval manuscripts (some sixteen of them, plus fragments) with illustrations. The descriptions of the manuscripts include complete palaeographical and codicological details and full information on the contents of the manuscripts and their history as far as it is known. Some of the manuscripts are of particular importance, either for their texts or for their illustrations, which are of good quality, or in one case because of the particular circumstances in which it was made. This material has lain mostly unknown for up to two hundred years, and in most cases the works contained in the manuscripts have not hitherto been identified. For the first time, consideration is also given to the collection as a whole, and how its make-up may reflect the history and character of the institution where it was built up. In the absence of any one major donor whose interests might have dominated, the collection grew over decades mainly in the nineteenth century. It therefore reflects the tastes of a succession of senior members of the college plus a few donors"--Publisher description.
