The Roots of Maxwell’s A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field
The formulation of Maxwell’s equations completely defines the connection between the electric field and the magnetic field, definitively unifying electricity and magnetism and at the same time providing a theoretical synthesis of all the experimental phenomena connected to these areas. In his revolutionary 1864 memoir where J.C. Maxwell presented his equations, he cites a handful of scientists, which were at the basis of his Theory. This book, in its first part, presents an insight on all these latter scientists, reconstructing the scientific network behind Maxwell’s unification and, in the second part, focuses on the Italians in such a network: Ottaviano Fabrizio Mossotti and Riccardo Felici, with a further insight on the connections between Maxwell and Italy and, in particular, Tuscany.
Enrico Fermi’s IEEE Milestone in Florence
Enrico Fermi, Nobel Laureate in Physics in 1938, taught at the University of Florence just for two academic years (1924-25 and 1925-26). His research activity in these two years saw the publication of the statistics bearing his name (the two original 1926 papers by E. Fermi are reproduced in full in this book), which is at the basis of semiconductors, and hence of modern electronics. This volume is printed for the placement, at the School of Engineering in Florence, of an IEEE Milestone, within the ‘IEEE Global History Network program’, commemorating the event. The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) is the largest professional association in the world devoted to advancing technological innovation in electrical, electronic engineering, and related fields.

Guglielmo Marconi and Enrico Fermi: Two Nobel Prizes Seen by the Rotarian Nello Carrara
This book is the fruit of an Italian-Swedish collaborative project involving the Rotary Stockholm International (District 2350), the University of Florence and the Rotary Club Firenze Sud (District 2071).The book opens with a section on Alfred Nobel and his ties to Italy, the city of Sanremo in particular. Most of the book is dedicated to two winners of the most prestigious award, the Nobel Prize, in both cases for Physics: Guglielmo Marconi (1909) and Enrico Fermi (1938). Both were Italian and both played a key role in the development of our telecommunications era: while Marconi is credited with the invention of the radio, Fermi developed the statistics that allowed the creation of solid-state electronics, in addition to making other important contributions to the field of nuclear Physics. These two outstanding scientists are here remembered through two lectures, given at different Florentine Rotary Clubs by a fellow scientist of theirs, Nello Carrara, who was also a key figure in high frequency electronics.
