While the strength of contemporary Latin American cinema is recognized worldwide, less is known of the cinema of Indigenous communities in the region, a territorial expanse known as Abya Yala. Even so, and even as these Indigenous filmmakers face ongoing challenges--including persecution, state violence, and a lack of infrastructure or funding--they have still managed to flourish over the past four decades, using cinema as a powerful tool for promoting advocacy and fostering self-determination. How do these filmmakers disrupt foundational narratives about their communities, and how does their cinema articulate Indigenous knowledges or provoke a rethinking of society, history, and planetary w...

In this engaging book, Maria Chiara D’Argenio delineates a turn in recent Latin American filmmaking towards inter/cultural feature films made by non-Indigenous directors. Aimed at a global audience, but played by Indigenous actors, these films tell Indigenous stories in Indigenous languages. Over the last two decades, a growing number of Latin American films have screened the Indigenous experience by combining the local and the global in a way that has proved appealing at international film festivals. Locating the films in composite webs of past and present traditions and forms, Indigenous Plots in Twenty-First Century Latin American Cinema examines the critical reflection offered by recen...
This five-part collection of poems ranges from highly political to gently playful and personal.
Quantum Thermodynamics is a novel research field which explores the emergence of thermodynamics from quantum theory and addresses thermodynamic phenomena which appear in finite-size, non-equilibrium and finite-time contexts. Blending together elements from open quantum systems, statistical mechanics, quantum many-body physics, and quantum information theory, it pinpoints thermodynamic advantages and barriers emerging from genuinely quantum properties such as quantum coherence and correlations. Owing to recent experimental efforts, the field is moving quickly towards practical applications, such as nano-scale heat devices, or thermodynamically optimised protocols for emergent quantum technolo...
This book shows the influence of medieval musical manuscripts on the articulation of national identity in Enlightenment Spain. For the eighteenth century Jesuit Andres Marcos Burriel (1719-1762) and his associate the calligrapher Francisco Palomares (1728-1796), the notation that preserved the music of the past was a central source in the study of history.
