Pillars of Sola Scriptura: Replies to Whitaker, Goode, & Biblical “Proofs� for “Bible Alone�
"Sola Scriptura" ("Scripture Alone") is considered one of the two "pillars" -- along with "sola fide," or "faith alone" -- of the Protestant Revolt of the sixteenth century. It's fundamental in Protestant thinking with regard to the all-important issue of Christian authority and determination of true theology. Most Protestant defenders of "Scripture Alone" contend that it is taught in the Bible. I maintain that their alleged prooftexts are invariably logically circular and fatally weak. William Whitaker (1548-1595) was an Anglican apologist. His masterwork was "Disputation on Holy Scripture," published in 1588. William Goode (1801-1868), also an Anglican, wrote "The Divine Rule of Faith and Practice" in 1842. These two works are considered by many Protestants to be the best defenses of "sola Scriptura" ever penned. I contend that they fail in their task, and that if indisputable biblical evidences for the position can't be found, it collapses in a heap of self-contradiction.

The Evangelical and Oxford Movements
This book is devoted to the writings of the Evangelical and Oxford movements, whose leading members were key figures in the religious debate that so preoccupied early Victorian society. The Evangelical writers included here - Charles Simeon, Francis Close, William Goode and Edward Miall - enjoyed wide influence in their own day but their writings are now either forgotten or largely inaccessible. The writers in the Oxford Movement represented here - Keble, Williams, Newman and Pusey - are better known, though only Newman's prose has received much attention. By concentrating upon the period 1825 to 1850 Dr Jay is able to show the complex social, educational, and political influences on the religious debate and to trace the dynamics of the relationship between the two movements. This book will prove to be an indispensable tool for all serious students of nineteenth-century literature, history and theology.
A Companion to Anglican Eucharistic Theology
Anglican eucharistic theology varies between the different philosophical assumptions of realism and nominalism. Whereas realism links the signs of the Eucharist with what they signify in a real way, nominalism sees these signs as reminders only of past and completed transaction. This book begins by discussing the multifomity of the philosophical assumptions underlying Anglican eucharistic theology and goes on to present extensive case study material which exemplify these different assumptions from the Reformation to the Nineteenth century. By examining the multiformity of philosophical assumptions this book avoids the hermeneutic idealism of particular church parties and looks instead at the Anglican eucharistic tradition in a more critical manner.
