Electronic Switching

This book is a thorough study of electronic switching, covering all aspects of the problem. It was written by a group of experienced switching engineers working for France's National Telecommunications Research Center (CNET). After a substantial review of general telephony, the authors discuss connection functions and their realization through either space division or time division, signalling principles on subscriber lines and trunk lines, traffic, network planning and operation and maintenance. Equipment and software are described from a didactic and functional approach. Theoretical aspects are illustrated using examples borrowed from the most modern electronic switching systems.

Public Technology Procurement and Innovation

Public Technology Procurement and Innovation

Public Technology Procurement and Innovation studies public technology procurement as an instrument of innovation policy. In the past few years, public technology procurement has been a relatively neglected topic in the theoretical and research literature on the economics of innovation. Similarly, preoccupation with `supply-side' measures has led policy-makers to avoid making very extensive use of this important `demand-side' instrument. These trends have been especially pronounced in the European Union. There, as this book will argue, existing legislation governing public procurement presents obstacles to the use of public technology procurement as a means of stimulating and supporting technological innovation. Recently, however, there has been a gradual re-awakening of practical interest in such measures among policy-makers in the EU and elsewhere. For these and other related measures, this volume aims to contribute to a serious reconsideration of public technology procurement from the complementary standpoints of innovation theory and innovation policy.

Nonlinear Optical Communication Networks

What telecommunications professionals need to know about nonlinear optical communication systems This book responds to the need for a coherent approach to nonlinear optical communication systems. It gives telecommunications researchers and engineers a handle on the unique problems presented by the proliferation of optical technologies in telecommunications in recent years and provides problem-solving strategies for various network functions and operations. The product of a collaborative effort by four well-known researchers in telecommunications transmission systems, this volume covers design basics, network performance, and state-of-the-art system analysis tools and is supplemented with hun...

Network Management

Try to imagine a railway network that did not check its rolling stock, track, and signals whenever a failure occurred, or only discovered the whereabouts of its lo comotives and carriages during annual stock taking. Just imagine a railway that kept its trains waiting because there were no available locomotives. Similar thoughts could apply to any transport network of trucks, buses, or taxis covering a wide geographical area. It is quite clear that the quality of service and safety, and the cost efficiency of any network depend on the effective and timely man agement of network resources. The same is true of telecommunications networks. For a long time now, telecom munications networks have b...
