This authoritative new resource presents fiber optic sensors and their applications in medical device design and biomedical engineering. Readers gain an understanding of which technology to use and adopt, and how to connect technologies with their respective applications. This book explores the innovation of diagnostics and how to use diagnostic tools. Principles of fiber optic sensing are covered and include details about intensity-based sensors, fiber bragg gratings, distributed sensors, and fabry-perot interferometers. This book explores interrogation software, standards for medical sensors, and discusses protocols and tools for validation. Various medical device engineering and applications are examined, including sensor catheterization, cardiovascular sensors, diagnostic in gastroscopy, urology, neurology, sensing in thermal ablation. Applications and detection of SPR sensors are presented, along with minimally invasive robotic surgery, smart textiles, wearable sensors and fiber-optic spectrometric sensors. This is a one-stop reference on fiber optic sensors for biomed applications.

This carefully edited book is putting emphasis on computational and artificial intelligent methods for learning and their relative applications in robotics, embedded systems, and ICT interfaces for psychological and neurological diseases. The book is a follow-up of the scientific workshop on Neural Networks (WIRN 2015) held in Vietri sul Mare, Italy, from the 20th to the 22nd of May 2015. The workshop, at its 27th edition became a traditional scientific event that brought together scientists from many countries, and several scientific disciplines. Each chapter is an extended version of the original contribution presented at the workshop, and together with the reviewers’ peer revisions it a...

Big Business and Dictatorships in Latin America

This edited volume studies the relationship between big business and the Latin American dictatorial regimes during the Cold War. The first section provides a general background about the contemporary history of business corporations and dictatorships in the twentieth century at the international level. The second section comprises chapters that analyze five national cases (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Peru), as well as a comparative analysis of the banking sector in the Southern Cone (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay). The third section presents six case studies of large companies in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Central America. This book is crucial reading because it provides the first comprehensive analysis of a key yet understudied topic in Cold War history in Latin America.

Guided Wave Nonlinear Optics

The object of this school, held at Cargese, Corsica (France) from August 12th to 24th 1991, was the presentation of the field of guided wave nonlinear optics in a comprehensive, coherent, and heuristic fashion. It seems appropriate that this school began with an historical introduction by Professor Nicolaas Bloembergen of Harvard, the acknowledged "father" of nonlinear optics, in general, and concluded with a round table discussion headed by Dr. Eric Spitz, the Scientific Director of a multinational electronics company interested in developing industrial applications of guided wave nonlinear optics. The lectures covered both the theoretical framework of the field and applications to basic sc...

Socio-Political Dynamics within the Crisis of the Left

Socio-Political Dynamics within the Crisis of the Left

Has the left turn come to a definite end? What have been the legacies of the left turn and how can they be measured? Who are the key actors shaping the new ‘anti-populist’ discourse and in what sense are they different from the social movements supporting progressive governments? How do these forms of identification relate to the dominant forms of subjectivisation in a globalized neoliberal world? Does the development of a new socio-political dynamic in the region strengthen or undermine the struggles for equality, democracy and more cohesive societies? This collection studies the gestation of the crisis of the left turn consensus dominant in Argentina and Brazil for the past 15 years and the emerging socio-political dynamics developing in this particular context of change. The volume identifies the traditional and emerging actors which have been influential in the socio-political arena for the past six to ten years. It also traces major episodes of protests between 2011-2015 in Brazil and Argentina.

Optimisation of Parametric Processes in Nonlinear Optical Waveguides

[ANGLÈS] This Master's Thesis presents an optimisation of parametric processes on two different materials used for optical communications. The main objective is to determine whether they are suitable for all-optical signal processing. Different methods for simulating the key parameters affecting their nonlinear behaviour are discussed, and a selection of them have been implemented in Matlab® to be used in the optimisation procedure. Such optimisation is based on maximising the efficiency of the parametric Four-Wave Mixing (FWM) process. This has been achieved by tailoring the waveguide geometry to engineer the dispersion properties, to minimise the propagation loss, and to maximise the nonlinear performance of the medium. The influence of the input pump power on the latter has also been discussed. Additionally, we present a comparison between different nonlinear media that resulted in a publication.
