This volume highlights the importance of diverse voices and perspectives in understanding the history and heritage of psychiatry. Exploring the complex interrelations between psychiatry, heritage and power, Narrating the Heritage of Psychiatry complicates the pervasive biomedical narrative of progress in which the history of psychiatry is usually framed. By examining multiple perspectives, including those of users/survivors of mental health services, the collection sheds light on neglected narratives and aims to broaden our understanding of psychiatric history and current practices. In doing so, it also considers the role of art, activism, and community narratives in reimagining and recontextualizing psychiatric heritage. This volume brings into conversation perspectives from practitioners, patients/users and scholars from the humanities and social sciences.

Nordic Romanticism: Translation, Transmission, Transformation is an edited collection exploring the varied and complex interactions between national romanticisms in Britain, Denmark, Germany, Norway and Sweden. The collection considers both the reception and influence of Nordic romanticism in Britain and Germany and also the reciprocal impact of British and German romanticism in the Nordic countries. Taken as a whole, the volume suggests that to fully understand the range of these individual national romanticisms we need to see them not as isolated phenomena but rather as participating, via translation and other modes of reception, in a transnational or regional romanticism configured around the idea of a shared cultural inheritance in ‘the North’.
This is the first book written for an English language audience on the work of the Finland-Swedish author, Runar Schildt (1888-1925). Schildt was a highly cosmopolitan writer, who kept a keen eye on the latest continental prose and showed an affinity for the literary decadence that was in fashion around the turn-of-the-century, as well as early modernism. He worked as a literary critic, a theater director, and a translator, which kept him in touch with the latest literary trends in Europe. The book posits that Schildt’s work bears witness to the turbulent times he lived in: he saw his native Finland transformed from a Grand Duchy of Russia to a republic, against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution and the Finnish Civil War. Schildt’s literary career provides important cultural and historical insights into this significant moment of modern European history.
