Nicolaus Sombart - Utopist, Libertin, Dandy
Nicolaus Sombart (1923-2008), der in Berlin einen berühmten Salon unterhielt, war eine Reizfigur der bundesrepublikanischen Gesellschaft. Als Soziologe deutete er die deutsche Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte als eine "chronique scandaleuse" der Geschlechterverhältnisse. Als Literat verstand er sich als einen Chronisten der "großen Welt", als einen der wenigen seiner Profession, der Zugang zu ihren Umgangs- und Verhaltensformen und erotischen Geheimnissen besaß. Der Anhänger des Utopisten Saint-Simon betrachtete sein Leben als ein unausgesetztes Experiment. Sein Bestreben war die Selbststilisierung der Person durch eine Verbindung von großbürgerlichem Habitus, dandyhafter Exzentrik und exhibitionistischer Geste, ein Unterfangen, das seine Wirkung in der heutigen medial geprägten Welt nicht verfehlte. Mit seiner facettenreichen Biographie dieser schillernden Figur der Berliner Society fügt der Kultursoziologe Günter Erbe seinen Untersuchungen der mondänen Welt ein weiteres erhellendes Kapitel hinzu. Er stützt sich dabei auf den umfangreichen Nachlass Nicolaus Sombarts.

Die Arbeit untersucht die Auseinandersetzung mit der ästhetischen Moderne in Kulturpolitik, Literaturwissenschaft und Literatur der DDR im Zeitraum 1945 - 1989. Die Analyse der Ursachen für die Entstehung des Affekts gegen die Moderne und der Gründe für ihre Rehabilitierung wird verknüpft mit der Frage nach dem Stand der gesellschaftlichen Modernisierung, der Legitimationsproblematik der politischen Funktionärsschicht und dem Selbstverständnis der literarischen Intelligenz. Die Modernität der DDR-Literatur wird unter doppeltem Aspekt betrachtet: als kunstinterne Befreiung vom vorgegebenen ästhetischen Regelkanon und als Loslösung von kunstfremden Verwendungsansprüchen. Die Arbeit leistet folglich auch einen Beitrag zur vieldiskutierten Frage nach der Möglichkeit literarischer Autonomie in der Zeit der SED-Herrschaft.

Where was the Working Class?
In six months bridging 1989 and 1990, the German Democratic Republic underwent a transformation that took the world almost completely by surprise. Yet unlike the revolution in Poland a decade earlier, only a small percentage of workers played apolitically active role in the fall of socialism in Germany. In this unprecedented study, Linda Fuller sets out to explain why the working class was largely missing from the 1989-90 revolution. Drawing on pre- and post-revolutionary visits to East German work sites and dozens of interviews, Fuller documents workers' day-to-day experience of the labor process, workplace union politics, and class. She shows how all three factors led most workers to withdraw from politics, even while prompting a handful to become actively involved in the struggle.
