Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is an analytical tool used by chemists and physicists to study the structure and dynamics of molecules. In recent years, no other technique has grown to such importance as NMR spectroscopy. It is used in all branches of science where precise structural determination is required and where the nature of interactions and reactions in solution is being studied. Annual Reports on NMR has established itself as a premier means for the specialist and nonspecialist alike to become familiar with new techniques and applications of NMR spectroscopy.* Includes comprehensive review articles on NMR Spectroscopy* Provides nonspecialists using this technology in all branches of science with the latest developments in the field* Keeps specialists up-to-date on the newest techniques in this important and fast-changing field

Pectins are one of the classes of complex structural plant cell wall polysaccharides. They are localized in the middle lamella and primary cell wall of higher plants. Pectins have a long-standing use as gelling agents whereas their enzymatic degradation or modification plays an important role in the processing of agricultural crops and the manufacturing of foods and beverages. Progress in pectin and pectinase research has been most prominent in two areas over the past 5 years. The first one concerns the analysis and elucidation of the complex chemical structure of pectin and identification of novel enzymes involved in the degradation of these structures. The second area concerns the mode of ...

Drugs from the Sea

Marine organisms have attracted much attention as potential sources for drugs over recent years. This timely book covers the discovery, development and production of drugs from marine bacteria, fungi, microalgae, sponges and opisthobranch mollusks. A recent highlight of marine natural product research described here is the development of a painkilling drug from the venom of a sea snail. Detailed accounts are also given on a novel anticancer drug, which was first isolated from a sponge, and a potential antiosteoporotic drug of hexacoral origin. The main challenge for future new drugs from the sea remains supply, but with production by fermentation and aquaculture two promising solutions are presented. The paper dealing with the identification and culture of symbiotic bacteria responsible for the production of bioactive sponge metabolites will make valuable reading for many researchers. 'Drugs from the Sea' will be of special interest to marine ecologists, chemists, and pharmacologists involved in drug development.

This book includes the fundamental science and applications of carbon-based materials, in particular fused polycyclic hydrocarbon, fullerene, diamond, carbides, graphite and graphene etc. During the past decade, these carbon-based materials have attracted much interest from many scientists and engineers because of their exciting physical properties and potential application toward electronic and energy devices. In this book, the fundamental theory referring to these materials, their syntheses and characterizations, the physical properties (physics), and the applications are fully described, which will contribute to an advancement of not only basic science in this research field but also technology using these materials. The book's targets are researchers and engineers in the field and graduate school students who specialize in physics, chemistry, and materials science. Thus, this book addresses the physics and chemistry of the principal materials in the twenty-first century.

New Enzymes for Organic Synthesis

New Enzymes for Organic Synthesis

Isolated enzymes are known as useful for synthesising of complex molecules with more and more large scale applications in recent years. These six reviews show different steps in the development of enzymatic syntheses for useful compounds. Screening of novel enzymes, their biochemical characterisation as well as reaction engineering approaches in order to increase their performance are treated in three papers. Then the use of protein design as a tool for the directed improvement of reactivity and selectivity of biocatalysts is described in two reviews. The supply of sufficient quantities of biocatalysts must not be neglected: fluidized bed adsorption as an emerging technology for the simple and fast purification of biomolecules is presented in the light of its potential in large scale supply of enzyme catalysts.

Complementary and Alternative Approaches to Biomedicine

WHAT HAPPENED IN KANAZAWA? THE BIRTH OF eCAM This book contains the proceedings of the International Symposium on Complementary and Alternative Medicine, (CAM) which was convened in Kanazawa Japan, November 8-10, 2002. The participants were mainly from Japan, USA, China, France, England, Germany, Taiwan, and India. The world of western medicine is gradually opening its doors to new ways of ap proaching healing. Since many of these approaches began centuries and even millennia ago in Asia, it was entirely appropriate to open our symposium in Kanazawa, a beautiful, traditional city located on the Sea of Japan. Experts from Asia, Europe and the United States gathered together for true discussio...
