Purpose: The management of patients with suspected appendicitis remains a challenge in daily clinical practice, and the optimal management algorithm is still being debated. Negative appendectomy rates (NAR) continue to range between 10 and 15%. This prospective study evaluated the accuracy of a diagnostic pathway in acute appendicitis using clinical risk stratification (Alvarado score), routine ultrasonography, gynecology consult for females, and selected CT after clinical reassessment. Methods: Patients presenting with suspected appendicitis between November 2015 and September 2017 from age 18 years and above were included. Decision-making followed a clear management pathway. Patients were ...

Statistical Methods for Quality of Life Studies

On October 16 and 17, 2000, we hosted an international workshop entitled "Statistical Design, Measurement, and Analysis of Health Related Quality of Life." The workshop was held in the beautiful city of Arradon, South Brittany, France with the main goal of fostering an interdisciplinary forum for discussion of theoretical and applied statistical issues arising in studies of health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Included were biostatisticians, psychometricians and public health professionals (e.g., physicians, sociologists, psychologists) active in the study ofHRQoL. In assembling this volume, we invited each conference participant to contribute a paper based on his or her presentation and ...

Atlas of Pathological Computer Tomography

It was our aim to place at the disposal of radiologists within a short time an atlas of high-quality, valuable pictures of abdominal CT without We felt that, the image degradation inherent to slower scanning apparatus. notwithstanding rapid evolution in CT scanning apparatus and the resulting rapid advances in our clinical knowledge about the value, limitations and applications of this new diagnostic imaging modality, an effort should be made to realize an atlas of reference. From more than 7,000 patients studied with abdominal CT, we tried to assemble images with maximal anatomical detail, which implies the use of large window settings, being well aware that in daily routine practice basic ...

Imaging of Acute Appendicitis in Adults and Children

This book is a comprehensive account of imaging of acute appendicitis and other appendiceal diseases. Background information is first provided on clinical presentation, perforation and negative appendectomy rates, and treatment options. The role of each imaging modality – radiography, ultrasound, CT, and MRI – is then considered separately in adults and children with suspected acute appendicitis. Many high-quality illustrations are included, and detailed information is provided on appropriate protocols and radiation saving. Further chapters addresses the spontaneously resolving and chronic appendicitis as well as other appendiceal lesions and review the findings of evidence-based medicine and cost-effectiveness analyses. Fluorescent Imaging

Indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence has been used for imaging purposes for more than half a century; First employed by ophthalmologists for visualizing the retinal artery in the late 1960s, the application of ICG fluorescence imaging has since been continuously expanded. Recently, advances in imaging technologies have led to renewed attention regarding the use of ICG in the field of hepatobiliary surgery, as a new tool for visualizing the biliary tree and liver tumors.

Acne

Acne is one of the commonest skin diseases that primary care/family physicians and dermatologists have to treat. Confirming the diagnosis is rarely a problem and given the wide spectrum of treatment options there really is no reason why most patients with acne cannot be helped enormously. However, the vast number of therapeutic options now available can pose difficulties for the prescribing clinician in deciding which is the preferred treatment. The purpose of this book is to highlight several features of the disease including etiology and clinical presentation whilst also reviewing the treatments available along with their respective modes of action and potential adverse effects.

Aluta Continua Biblical Hermeneutics for Liberation

This book was passed as a PhD thesis at Bayreuth University, Germany. The author challenges African Biblical scholars and Christian leaders to premise Biblical interpretation on the experiences of the often neglected underclasses. The author argues that from a comparative historical, cultural and material methodological point of view, the experiences of the Zimbabwean underclasses whose collective ordeal is represented by the experiences of domestic workers are strikingly similar to those suffered by slaves among other underclasses in the biblical world. In the same way religion was appropriated by the elite to validate oppression of the underclasses in the biblical world, the author shows t...
