Transhumant Pastoralism in Southern Europe
Sixteen perspectives from archaeology, history and ethnology bring together recent research on the origins, development and eventual demise of transhumant pastoralism. All the papers except one were presented at a symposium during the 12th International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences at Zagreb, July 1988, and one of the ultimate aims of the collection is to present a series of testable models that can be used to help identify the signs of transhumant pastoral adaptation in the archaeological record, given the difficulty of establishing its presence and significance in the study of prehistoric cultural systems. Social Zooarchaeology
This is the first book to provide a systematic overview of social zooarchaeology, which takes a holistic view of human-animal relations in the past. Until recently, archaeological analysis of faunal evidence has primarily focused on the role of animals in the human diet and subsistence economy. This book, however, argues that animals have always played many more roles in human societies: as wealth, companions, spirit helpers, sacrificial victims, totems, centerpieces of feasts, objects of taboos, and more. These social factors are as significant as taphonomic processes in shaping animal bone assemblages. Nerissa Russell uses evidence derived from not only zooarchaeology, but also ethnography, history and classical studies, to suggest the range of human-animal relationships and to examine their importance in human society. Through exploring the significance of animals to ancient humans, this book provides a richer picture of past societies.

Goltepe Excavations
This volume presents over fifteen years (1981-1996) of archaeometallurgy surveys and specifically the excavations of an Early Bronze Age miners' village, Goltepe and its associated tin mine, Kestel. The results of the surface surveys, test pit operations, profile trenches and excavation finds demonstrate that processing of cassiterite-rich ore was the primary function of activities at Goltepe. The variety and density of tin-rich vitrified crucibles as well as ground, powdered tin-rich ore from excavated contexts were only some of the several lines of evidence. The Origins of Transhumant Pastoralism in Temperate Southeastern Europe
Chapter 7 describes the data examined in this investigation. In the chapter, each site is described, including site location, environment and nature of deposits. The mandibular and loose teeth remains are quantified by species and by major period. It also describes the thin sectioning data, both the modern comparative collection and the archaeological sample. Chapter 8 presents the results of the data analysis. The first part focuses on the tooth wear and eruption data, examining both production strategies and implications for the transhumant movement of herds. The second part focuses on the thin sectioning results. Chapter 9 presents the final conclusions regarding the data and discusses their implication in terms of the origins of transhumant pastoralism in the northern Balkans.
