Unapologetically Me

The bond between mother and child is a strong one, but what happens when that connection is complicated by drugs, addiction and mental illness? What becomes of the child whose only desire is to be loved by the mother who abandoned her? And how does that child, now a woman herself, avoid the mistakes her mother made that seemingly come natural to her? In UNAPOLOGETICALLY ME, Leah Forney recounts her personal story of abandonment and redemption to inspire others and teach them that even the painful parts of our lives have a purpose. Moving and gut-wrenchingly honest, Leah offers no sugary solutions to life's tough questions. Instead she presents the truth she learned after years of fruitlessly searching for love in all the wrong places - that only God's love can change you and move you beyond the shame and guilt of your past. Read Leah's story and learn how you too can become unapologetic about who you are and who you were created to be

Cheer Up!

Who will remember 'Our Gracie' waving goodbye; Jack Buchanan constantly bumping into Elsie Randolph; Bobby Howes celebrating the invention of the Belisha Beacon, doing a cat duet with Wylie Watson and giving ideas to Rene Ray about ham sandwiches; John Wood and Claire Luce climbing the steps of the lighthouse and breathing on windows in Over She Goes, these accompanied by some of the most deft British and American composers of their time, their work lighter and freer than air. We catch those airs still, breathing on windows and wondering what became of it all. Book jacket.

The Conspiracy of the Good addresses nagging questions that are part of the public debate over schooling. Why do our public schools, especially those in poor and working-class communities of color, fail to live up to the promises of the American dream? Why do reforms, those standard items in political campaigns, fail to create meaningful change? This book argues that «progressive», well-meaning, good-hearted men and women, who often advocate «good intentions» in the name of «helping those in need», have ended up doing more harm than good. The Conspiracy of the Good explores how these «good intentions» go awry. Michael E. James argues that the core value of the American experience is conflict - not consensus - despite what mainstream historians have espoused over the last few decades.

Each of the graded walks are presented against a background of cultural, historical and environmental information: village life, festivals, natural history and, importantly, low-impact ethical travel. Information on what to take, health and safety, local guides, and pack animals, along with many other topics make this guide indispensable.

Hazel's idyllic childhood is torn apart by the bombing of Rangoon, just prior to Christmas 1941. Her parents convince her she is off on a marvellous holiday as they flee the city - leaving her precious dolls behind. The Japanese armies overrun Burma, forcing her family to flee from one refuge to another. Hazel's father, a Muslim, has worked for the British government and initially relies on the official refugee policy. Her mother, a Catholic, fears for her children - especially Hazel's older brothers who take daring opportunities to harass the Japanese. Told through a child's eyes, this story tells of a family's travails during the darkest days of enemy occupation. Threaded with light, shot through with hope, it recounts Hazel's hard-won passage from innocence to maturity.

Lance Comfort

In the years between 1941 and 1965, Lance Comfort made some of the most entertaining films in Britain. There was the striking success of his second feature as director, Hatter’s Castle (1941) and when he returned to this melodramatic vein in 1945 he made a series of highly proficient and enjoyable studies in obsession, including Bedelia (1946) with Margaret Lockwood as a murderess, and Temptation Harbour (1947) starring Robert Newton as a decent man in the grip of erotic attraction. Comfort’s career has never been charted in full – that is, from the apprenticeship in the 1930s, through the melodramas of the 1940s to the often rewarding co-features of the following two decades. His is in many ways a prototypical career in British cinema: his very attractive body of work has been marginalised by critical focus on a few giant figures. This is a book that will appeal to all students and researchers in British cinema, as well as to anyone with an interest in British films – and why they were the way they were – in their most productive period.
