Femininities in the Field

The aim of this book is to analyse and reflect on the effect of femininities in the field and the encountered biases specific to women researchers in tourism studies. The purpose of the book is to define potential areas of gender bias using international case studies from five continents to improve the validity and transparency of future research conducted by researchers in transcultural contexts. It covers broad themes including access, attire and conduct, sexual harassment, personal safety, and accompanied research and well-being. The volume provides case studies using reflexivity to create baselines for comparison for female (and male) researchers doing fieldwork and outlines potential areas of concern for supervisors through a transdisciplinary approach in a global context. It is an essential guide for supervisors, students, ethics committee members and any researchers.

Family Tourism

Family Tourism

The family remains at the emotional heart of society, and makes up a significant proportion of the tourism market. However, the concept of family has changed over the decades and there are now different types of families that have their own unique attributes and needs. Families may have one parent or two, who may or may not be of different genders. This cutting-edge book constructs a multidisciplinary perspective on family tourism by discussing various types of families; how parents and children influence travel behaviours now and in the future and how family holidays may also be linked to stress. Family Tourism: Multidisciplinary Perspectives provides a compilation of issues from academic writers around the globe, to provide a range of perspectives linked by a common theme of family tourism with a futures perspective.

Masculinities in the Field

This volume is an essential reference for designing, analysing and reflecting on field research. It advances the literature on gender by taking a specific focus on masculinities. The book is organised into four sections: hegemonic and heteronormative masculinities, performing heteronormative masculinities, situated masculinities and paternal masculinities. The chapters explore the question of what it means to be a ‘man’ and definitions of masculinities. These reflexive accounts of gendered field experiences further the call for gender positionality in research and will aid tourism researchers and other transdisciplinary scholars. It is a useful tool for supervisors, ethics committee members and researchers (male and female).

This book aims to further academic debate within the leisure and tourism studies community about the role of ‘families’ in contemporary life and the experiences of families and their children in the leisure environment. It is based on the recognition of the diverse nature of the family in the contemporary era and the position of children in families and society in general as active and knowing social agents rather than as passive objects. The family is on the one hand our first community with its own special kind of human attachment and on the other a little world on which the larger society is modelled. Families form the closest and most important emotional bond in humans. This relationship is what drives humanity and society, and positions families at the centre of leisure activities. This international and multi-disciplinary compilation of recent research into children and families examines progress made and challenges ahead for leisure studies. It extends the academic discourse to a wider understanding of what families, children and their leisure behaviour mean in today’s societies. This book was originally published as a special issue of Annals of Leisure Research.

It is divided into four parts: an introduction setting the scene of tourism education and Asia; case studies of tourism education in various Asian countries; case studies of tourism education of Asian students abroad and their trans-national student experiences; and broader perspectives on intra-Asian and transnational tourism education. The book provides a systematic guide to the current state of knowledge on tourism education and Asia and its future direction, and is essential reading for students, researchers, educational practitioners, and academics in Tourism Studies.

The Variational Approach to Fracture

Presenting original results from both theoretical and numerical viewpoints, this text offers a detailed discussion of the variational approach to brittle fracture. This approach views crack growth as the result of a competition between bulk and surface energy, treating crack evolution from its initiation all the way to the failure of a sample. The authors model crack initiation, crack path, and crack extension for arbitrary geometries and loads.

The focus of this book is on holiday planning and decision making, which is the cornerstone of tourist behaviour and tourism marketing. The first three chapters deal with the basics, including an overview of decision-making paradigms and variables (chapter 1), a critical review of existing tourist behaviour models (chapter 2) and a description of the methods that may be used for studying holiday decision making (chapter 3). The chapters that follow relate the findings of an in-depth qualitative and interpretative study that followed the decision making process of 25 Belgian households during a whole year. Chapter 4 discusses the context in which holiday decisions are made. In the next two chapters, the focus is on the decision-making process in itself both at the generic and holiday levels (chapter 5) and at the destination level (chapter 6). Post-experience processes are investigated in chapter 7, whereas group processes are the particular focus of chapter 8. Chapter 9 presents the integrative and conclusive part of the book where a new typology of holidaymakers is proposed. The book has a subject index.
