Shangri-La
Visitors were forewarned, a hand-written sign announcing: "The museum testifies to the thousand year history, work and labour of our ancestors. The exhibition extends for over 5000 m2." From the outset, it was a utopian undertaking. Not without reason does the lama monastery Shangri-La from James Hilton's novel Lost Horizon serve as namesake to this museum. Pietro Benzi (1931 - 2014) maintained the project from 1965 onwards. He collected what they no longer wanted, what had become antiquated or gone out of fashion: 2.7 million everyday objects, many of which were household effects, religious kitsch, knick-knacks, shoes and plastic toys. This photographic essay takes the viewer on a journey inside his unsystematic collection.

Bombs Away!
Prompted by recent challenges to and debates about the relative public silence concerning the effects of the Allied air war over Europe during World War II, this collection of essays examines literary, visual (film and photography), and institutional (museums) representations of the bombing of civilian targets, predominantly in Germany. The authors examine narrative strategies of both well-known and relatively little known works as well as the moral and ideological presuppositions of the varied representations of the depredations of total war. The introduction and afterword by the editors invite the readers to expand the contours and historical context of the debates about the German public discourse on the bombing war beyond the narrow confines of perpetrators and victims. The volume will be of interest to literary scholars, historians, and the general reading public interested in warfare and its effects on civilian populations.

The Man Nobody Knows
In this book, Roy Pateman provides the most reader-friendly, up to date biography of B. Traven, an enigmatic writer whose readership spread across broader class, race, and language divides more than anyone else writing during the twentieth century. This unconventional biography discusses Traven's alternative histories, followed by an attempt to find out the major influences of this elusive man. Pateman addresses Traven's politics, his life of humanist anarchism, and discusses all of his works (in English and German), emphasizing The Death Ship, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and the "Jungle Sextet." Also included is a chronology of Traven's life, which is fuller than that found in any other study. The book ends with a modest solution to the intractable problem of who Traven really was and where he was born and raised.
The Age of Secrecy
The fifteenth through the eighteenth centuries were truly an Age of Secrecy in Europe, when arcane knowledge was widely believed to be positive knowledge which extended into all areas of daily life. So asserts Daniel Jütte in this engrossing, vivid, and award-winning work. He maintains that the widespread acceptance and even reverence for this “economy of secrets” in premodern Europe created a highly complex and sometimes perilous space for mutual contact between Jews and Christians. Surveying the interactions between the two religious groups in a wide array of secret sciences and practices, the author relates true stories of colorful “professors of secrets” and clandestine encounters. In the process Jütte examines how our current notion of secrecy is radically different in this era of WikiLeaks, Snowden, etc., as opposed to centuries earlier when the truest, most important knowledge was generally considered to be secret by definition.
