The Enemy Among Us

"For residents of the mostly small towns where these camps were located, the arrival of enemy POWs engendered a range of emotions - first fear and apprehension, then curiosity, and finally, in many cases, a feeling of fondness for the men they had come to know and like."--BOOK JACKET.

Fascism in Greece

Fascism in Greece

From 1936 to 1941 Greece was ruled dictatorially by a duumvirate of King George II and General Metaxas. In the scholarly literature the regime of 4th August, as it called itself, is described as a royal dictatorship. Its characterization as fascist is rejected by most authors to this day. Harry Cliadakis proves the opposite in his book; his description leaves no doubt about the fascist character of the regime. In a contribution by Heinz Richter this interpretation is strengthened: It was fasciscm in a political system based on clientelism.

Richter's study does not view the Battle of Crete in isolation as a purely military event, but as part of the then political and military confrontation between the British world and its allies with the Axis p...

Tobacco, Arms, and Politics

This is the first comprehensive analysis of the political and economic effects of Germany's policy towards Greece in the crisis-ridden decade prior to the axis occupation in April 1941. Based on extensive research into declassified official archives in Germany, Britain and Greece as well as records from private firms, it examines the objectives and implementation of Germany's policy and the responses to it in Greece. By analysing especially the trade in tobacco and arms, the main items in Greek-German commercial exchange, it maintains that the impact of the German policy towards Greece played an important part in the establishment of the Metaxas dictatorship in 1936. - and urthermore that Be...
