"Some of the most interesting monuments of bygone days have been found on out-of-the-way farms, and even where monuments are wanting, tradition often indicates the spot where some manor lord or Colonial Governor lies buried. The various stones, tablets, and traditions, still remaining serve to revive much of Maryland's primitive social life. Had it not been for the vandalism of some and the ignorance of others, much more might be found to supply missing links in county records, or to fill the gaps in carelessly kept parish registers....Isolated stones have been found in fields, by the roadside and beneath dwellings, also in use as doorsteps or as flagstones with the inscriptions turned under." This narrative account includes inscriptions appearing on tombstones in most of Maryland's counties and the District of Columbia. An index to full-names, places and subjects completes this work.

The Dorsey Family

The work at hand is the only comprehensive history of Anson County, spanning over 225 years of the county's growth from a vast wilderness to a thriving industrial and agricultural community. The first third of the volume traces politics in the county. The middle portion covers Anson's social history, including education, religion, agriculture and industry, social and cultural life, etc. The final third of the book provides biographical sketches of scores of Anson "Men and Women of Note" and a number of source record collections of great import to genealogists.

Hampton National Historic Site

Hampton National Historic Site in Towson, Maryland, was established in 1948 to preserve the surviving 63 acres of the vast empire built by the Ridgely family beginning in the 18th century. In its heyday, the estate covered 25,000 noncontiguous acres and included agricultural fields, orchards, livestock, quarries, mills, and ironworks. Today visitors flock to the magnificent Georgian mansion, farm manager's house, slave quarters, dairy, agricultural buildings, formal gardens, and family cemetery. The story of Hampton National Historic Site extends beyond its buildings and setting to the people who lived and worked on the estate during the 200plus years of Ridgely ownership, including the indentured servants, the enslaved, and the paid workforce. The legacy of Hampton National Historic Site is illustrated here through rich primary source material that was generated for and by the Ridgelys, including written documentation, historic images, and physical artifacts.
