Coming to Terms with the "dark Past"
Discusses the debate in Poland concerning J.T. Gross's "Neighbors" (2000) which describes the massacre of the Jews of Jedwabne by Poles in July 1941. Gross's work raises questions about Polish-Jewish relations during World War II and the Poles' image of themselves solely as victims. In the continuing public debate, some Poles accept Gross's ideas and advocate a critical view of Polish relations with Jews, and other related problems, whilst defensive, nationalistic, and sometimes antisemitic Poles try to maintain non-critical views of their country and its history. Some events, e.g. the investigation of the Jedwabne massacre by the Institute of National Memory and official commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the crime, indicate that part of Polish society is ready to face up to its complex past. However, right-wing reactions indicate the persistence of opposing forces that continue to defend the image of the Poles as martyrs and accuse Jews of Polonophobia.
