The Fabulous Frontier, 1846-1912

Recapturing the atmosphere of Territorial days, this 1962 extensively annotated edition of a Southwestern classic focuses on southeastern New Mexico, where "murder was a common offense" and stagecoach robberies were "nothing to get excited about." The delineation of this last, lively frontier begins in 1846 and ends in 1912 with New Mexico statehood. Here are the deeds, lives and legends of the colorful men who figure in New Mexico history. The lucky ones: John J. Baxter who struck it rich at White Oaks, Tom Wilson and Uncle Jack Winters of the Homestake claim, Jack Martin who brought water to the Jornada del Muerto and started the desperate struggle among stockmen culminating in the Lincoln...

Ditches Across the Desert

"Today the once formidable Pecos River, dammed in many places for irrigation, its springs pumped dry in others, has become a mere shadow of its former self. Although it now leads a precarious existence, the contest over its water - within New Mexico and between New Mexico and Texas through the Pecos River Compact - continues."--Jacket.

In 1890, the U.S. government declared the frontier settled, and the "Wild West" was history. In the territory of New Mexico, however, crime still knew no limit and the gun was the final answer to all problems. Aiming to help New Mexico achieve statehood, its leaders decided they needed a mounted police force like those that had tamed Texas and Arizona. This book describes the birth of the New Mexico Mounted Police in 1905 and tells the stories of the members of the original Mounties, starting with their first captain, John F. Fullerton. Information drawn from personal interviews with ranger family members (many of whom provided photographs), Fullerton's personal papers and official Mounted Police records brings a wealth of detail to this story from New Mexico's rich history. Fred Lambert, the last surviving member of the territorial rangers, provides a foreword.

New Mexico's Rangers

The New Mexico Mounted Police were forged from a frontier civil crisis and hammered to life upon the anvil of necessity. The Sunshine Territory of New Mexico had become the last outlaw haven in the Southwest. In the tradition of their red-coated namesake, the Northwest Mounted Police of Canada, this small band of range riders used their fists, guns, and brains to restore law and order during the closing years of New Mexicos territorial era. They carried their mission forward into the early days of statehood.
