Presenting the most recent research and written by an expert in the field, this examination explores the principal interrelationships between the British Crown and the Maori people in the 1950s and 1960s when Crown assimilation policies intensified—and during the 1970s—when the pressure of the Maori renaissance encouraged policies and goals based on biculturalism. Following the work of John Lewis Gaddis, historians have been reassessing the legacy of the Cold War and producing a 'New Cold War History'. Alexander Trapeznik and Aaron Fox (an independent historian based in New Zealand) hope to introduce the 'New Cold War' historiography to the context of New Zealand through the presentation of these ten papers. Beginning with Gaddis' own observations on the overall questions of the project, papers proceed to discuss New Zealand's Cold War defence policy, the relationship of Communist Party of New Zealand with their Australian counterparts and the Comintern, the response of New Zealand's labour movement to international communism, New Zealand-China relations, and Soviet views of New Zealand.

The heavily illustrated book provides a vivid account of public-spiritedness, enterprise and innovation by people involved in St John over the past 125 years, peppered with occasional disputes and setbacks along the way. St John invented and popularised 'first aid' as we know it. It provided medical assistance from the sidelines of our sports fields from as early as 1891 and it played a leading role in disaster relief from its formative days. From humble beginnings it established a nationwide ambulance service that today is the envy of the St John fraternity worldwide.
Normally historians do not consider Australia and New Zealand as having a common experience, but Bennett (U. of Aukland) takes careful note of the labour movement that took hold of both countries for about 50 years, beginning in the 1890s. He explains how labour organising became a multinational entity as groups from both countries supported each other's strikes, followed each other's efforts in arbitration, and used each other's experiences in organisation to move toward progress in unionisation. Bennett examines the large number of separate groups that appeared to keep a close eye on each other as the world moved toward the Depression and on to the Second World War, events that substantially changed the labour movements in both countries.
