A Woman in the Polar Night

In this extraordinary adventure, a reluctant visitor to the Arctic thrives in the awesome and unforgiving landscape. In 1933, Christiane Ritter, a painter from Austria, travelled to Spitsbergen, an Arctic island north of Norway, to be with her husband. He had been taking part in a scientific expedition and stayed on to hunt and fish. “Leave everything as it is and follow me to the Arctic,” he wrote to his wife; but for Christiane, “as for all central Europeans, the Arctic was just another word for freezing and forsaken solitude. I did not follow at once.” Eventually she gave in, lured by his compelling stories about the remarkable wildlife and alluring light shows. She says: “They told of journeys by water and over ice, of the animals and the fascination of the wilderness, of the strange light over the landscape, of the strange illumination of one’s own self in the remoteness of the polar night. In his descriptions there was practically never any mention of cold or darkness, of storms or hardships.”

“Harmsen makes a convincing argument that the occupation of Greenland fits within the broader narrative of the war, and is just as important to remember and understand as ‘bigger’ events that overshadow it... recommended for readers of all levels, scholarly or casual.” - The Journal of America's Military Past The wartime interest in Greenland was a direct result of its vital strategic position—if you wanted to predict the weather in Europe, you had to have men in place on the vast, frozen island. The most celebrated example of Greenland’s crucial contribution to Allied meteorological services is the correct weather forecast in June 1944 leading to the decision to launch the invas...

War North of 80

Obtaining weather data was vital for military operations in Northwestern Europe during World War II. In an effort to secure this data, the German Navy and air force secretly established manned weather stations in East Greenland, Svalbard, and Franz Josef Land. This is the personal story of Wilhelm Dege, the leader of the last weather station, code-named "Operation Haudegen". Originally written in German, Dege describes the mission from beginning to end. On 9 May 1945, the allies despatched a vessel to pick up Dege and his team; in effect, Dege and his team were the last German troops to surrender. With a detailed introduction, this translation offers English-speaking readers a rare glimpse into the Germans' account of weather activities during World War II in the Arctic. An epilogue written by Dege's son offers insight into the various fates of the expedition members who worked alongside his father.

Roddy MacKenzie’s father served in Bomber Command during the Second World War, but like so many brave veterans who had survived the war, he spoke little of his exploits. So, when Roddy started on his personal journey to discover something of what his father had achieved, he uncovered a great deal about the devastating effectiveness of Bomber Command and the vital role it played in the defeat of Third Reich. He realised that the true story of Bomber Command’s achievements has never been told nor fully acknowledged. Roddy became a man on a mission, and this startlingly revealing, and often personal study, is the result. Bomber Command: Churchill's Greatest Triumph takes the reader through ...
