Hermann von Wissmann (1853-1905) war Afrikaforscher, Offizier und Kolonialbeamter. Von 1888 bis 1891war er Reichskommissar und von 1895 bis1896 Gouverneur von Deutsch-Ostafrika. Vor dieser Zeit war er als Afrikaforscher unter anderem im Auftrag des belgischen Königs 1883 bis 1885 in Zentralafrika tätig und durchquerte 1886-1887 Afrika vom Kongo bis zur Sambesimündung.
