Collecting Nature

  • Categories: Art

Nature can be collected in many forms and shapes: live animals have been locked up in cages, displayed in zoos and menageries and their hides and dried body parts have been used as part of installations in galleries and studies. Plants from far-away countries have been cultivated in botanical gardens and in hothouses. Furthermore, the depiction of medicinal plants and of prized animals was regarded as an important part of the decorative schemes, in an attempt to bring nature indoors. This is the first full length account of the life and ideas of Mary Douglas, the British social anthropologist whose publications span the second half of the twentieth century. Richard Fardon covers Douglas' family background, and the pervasive influence of her catholic faith on her writings before providing an analysis of two of her most influential works; Purity and Danger (1966) and Natural Symbols (1970). The final section deals with Douglas' more controversial writings in the fields of economics, consumption, religion and risk analysis in contemporary societies. Throughout, Fardon highlights the centrality of Douglas' role in the history of anthropology and the discipline's struggle to achieve relevance to contemporary, western societies.

Purchased for the most part in 1869-71 by the founders of the Crocker Art Museum, the master drawings in this rich historic collection are in some ways a time capsule that gives insight into the European art market and the taste of the patrons. Through this catalogue the Museum introduces a selection of the best drawings to the public for the first time, and provides a splendid overview of this unique collection, shedding fuller light on its history and context, both in relation to California events and to American patronage.
