The Homunculi Approach to Social and Emotional Wellbeing
The Homunculi, (or 'little people'), is a fun activity that builds social and emotional resilience in children and young people, aged 7 upwards, and into the teenage years. It is particularly suited to those with high functioning autism or Asperger's Syndrome who often have difficulty identifying troubling feelings such as anger, fear and anxiety. The Homunculi are miniature agents with problem-solving missions and special gadgets who live inside the brain and help out with distressing thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Through inventing their own Homunculi characters and stories, participants in the activity learn to cope with their real-life social problems. Complete with a large-format skull poster, character and storyboard templates, and photocopiable record sheets, this unique resource includes everything needed to get started on making Homunculi stories, cartoons or videos. Homunculus is a long poem from award-winning poet and translator James Womack, based around the Elegies of the Roman poet Maximian. The last of the Roman poets, Maximian wrote in the sixth century, after the fall of the Western Roman Empire; critics have called his Elegies 'one of the strangest documents of the human mind', and W.H. Auden singled him out as a 'really remarkable poet'. Womack's versioning of the Elegies shows how this harsh poem of sex and old age can speak to our own contemporary, collapsing world.

With a donation of the necessary body parts from Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebel, General Butt Naked, he has constructed a small legion of grotesque bio-robots. Anxious to be rid of his creations before problems arise, he tries to sell his Homunculi to the Japanese doomsday cult, Aum Shinrikyo. When this fails, Rindert, a disillusioned South African mercenary, takes over marketing. The volatile political situation erupts as peace talks between political factions disintegrate and the RUF attempts to seize the capital while it is under environmental attack, suffering the most violent storms in the country's history. Against this turbulent background, a homunculus auction is arranged. With the capital, Freetown, in anarchy, Liberian radicals poised to invade and drug-crazed soldiers terrorising the countryside, a particularly unsavoury group of buyers is invited, with inevitably exciting results.
