Master teacher Hou Hee Chan offers a rare insight into the concepts and methods of Zhineng Qigong--introduced to the West as Chilel Qigong by Hou Hee Chan and his brother, Luke Chan, who have both published works on Zhineng Qigong. This book is unique in that it offers exceptional and in-depth explanations of the basic practices of Zhineng Qigong, originally written in Chinese by Dr. Pang Ming, whose extensive writings include a nine-book series on Zhineng Qigong. As Master Chan has observed, no one can translate Dr. Pang's books as they are written; all one can do is interpret them as closely to the original as possible. Combining his understanding of both the theories and methods of Qigong...

River of Fire and Other Stories

O Chonghui crafts historically-rooted yet timeless tales imagining core human experiences from a female point of view. Since her debut in 1968, she has formed a powerful challenge to the patriarchal literary establishment in Korea, and her work has invited rich comparisons with the achievements of Joyce Carol Oates, Alice Munro, and Virginia Woolf. These nine stories range from O Chonghui's first published work, in 1968, to one of her last publications, in 1994. Her early stories are compact, often chilling accounts of family dysfunction, reflecting the decline of traditional, agrarian economics and the rise of urban, industrial living. Later stories are more expansive, weaving eloquent, occ...

Rules of the House

At publication date, a free ebook version of this title will be available through Luminos, University of California Press’s Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Rules of the House offers a dynamic revisionist account of the Japanese colonial rule of Korea (1910–1945) by examining the roles of women in the civil courts. Challenging the dominant view that women were victimized by the Japanese family laws and its patriarchal biases, Sungyun Lim argues that Korean women had to struggle equally against Korean patriarchal interests. Moreover, women were not passive victims; instead, they proactively struggled to expand their rights by participating in the Japanese colonial legal system. In turn, the Japanese doctrine of promoting progressive legal rights would prove advantageous to them. Following female plaintiffs and their civil disputes from the precolonial Choson dynasty through colonial times and into postcolonial reforms, this book presents a new and groundbreaking story about Korean women’s legal struggles, revealing their surprising collaborative relationship with the colonial state.

Higher Education in Taiwan

This book discusses the situation of Taiwanese universities facing a rapidly changing domestic and global environment. It examines the social structure, drawing on professional perspectives, data-based and systematic analysis. The book fills gaps in the literature of higher education systems in East Asia, of which Taiwan is a representative nation. It provides the readers with great opportunities to understand the historical, political and cultural background of the higher education system in Taiwan and shares Taiwan’s experience of how higher education institutions respond to the new challenges such as an ageing society, the pursuit of equity and inclusion, execution of talent recruitment, and the use of technological innovation. Finally the book discusses the implication of institutional research in university governance.
