Grete Hermann (1901-1984) was a pupil of mathematical physicist Emmy Noether, follower and co-worker of neo-Kantian philosopher Leonard Nelson, and an important intellectual figure in post-war German social democracy. She is best known for her work on the philosophy of modern physics in the 1930s, some of which emerged from intense discussions with Heisenberg and Weizsäcker in Leipzig. Hermann’s aim was to counter the threat to the Kantian notion of causality coming from quantum mechanics. She also discussed in depth the question of ‘hidden variables’ (including the first critique of von Neumann’s alleged impossibility proof) and provided an extensive analysis of Bohr’s notion of ...

My Father, Hermann Apelt has two parts. The first part consists of my own memories, written documents of my father such as letters, articles, poems, and newspaper articles about his death. My father wrote and spoke a great deal but never published a book. Others did it for him. His best friend and colleague in the Senate of the city of Bremen, Germany, published Hermann Apelt, Reden und Schriften (speeches and writings) in collaboration with my mother, Julie Apelt, after his death in 1960. The second part consists of translations from this book. My father accomplished much in his life, in his political career as a senator, as one of the saviors of the Bremen ports, as a man of many interests, as a poet, and as a concerned father of four daughters. He traveled much and he admired the United States of America. I wrote this book in order to document the legacy this great German man, my father, has left to all of us.

Hermann Abert's classic biography, first published in German more than eighty years ago and itself based on the definitive mid-nineteenth century study by Otto Jahn, remains the most informed and substantial biography of Mozart in any language. The book is both the fullest account of the composer’s life and a deeply skilled analysis of his music. Proceeding chronologically from 1756 to 1791, the book interrogates every aspect of Mozart’s life, influences, and experience; his personality; his religious and secular dimensions; and the social context of the time. In "a book within a book,” Abert also provides close scrutiny of the music, including the operas, orchestral work, symphonies a...

Hermann Weyl’s Raum - Zeit - Materie and a General Introduction to His Scientific Work

  • Publisher: Birkhäuser

Historical interest and studies of Weyl's role in the interplay between 20th-century mathematics, physics and philosophy have been increasing since the middle 1980s, triggered by different activities at the occasion of the centenary of his birth in 1985, and are far from being exhausted. The present book takes Weyl's "Raum - Zeit - Materie" (Space - Time - Matter) as center of concentration and starting field for a broader look at his work. The contributions in the first part of this volume discuss Weyl's deep involvement in relativity, cosmology and matter theories between the classical unified field theories and quantum physics from the perspective of a creative mind struggling against theories of nature restricted by the view of classical determinism. In the second part of this volume, a broad and detailed introduction is given to Weyl's work in the mathematical sciences in general and in philosophy. It covers the whole range of Weyl's mathematical and physical interests: real analysis, complex function theory and Riemann surfaces, elementary ergodic theory, foundations of mathematics, differential geometry, general relativity, Lie groups, quantum mechanics, and number theory.
