Multidimensional scaling (MDS) is a technique for the analysis of similarity or dissimilarity data on a set of objects. Such data may be intercorrelations of test items, ratings of similarity on political candidates, or trade indices for a set of countries. The study of social networks is a new but fast widening multidisciplinary area involving social, mathematical, statistical and computer sciences for application in diverse social environments; in the latter sciences, and specially for the field of Economics. It has its own parameters and methodological tools. Social Capital in Organizations
As recently as one generation ago, the term organization was synonymous with stasis, reliability, hierarchy and disciplined productivity. The new guiding principles of management practise, meanwhile, are dynamism, flexibility, teams and emancipated interactivity. The new key term “network” has summed up these contemporary organizational trends. This study suggests the interpretation of networks as social capital of individuals and organizations. This understanding requires a theoretical and methodological refocusing on the actions of the organization’s members. The present study places a variant of action theory – socioeconomic exchange theory – centre stage, fuses this theory with the toolkit of social network analysis and puts the resulting synthesis to the test by examining cooperation among equal members of an organization.

Visualization and Verbalization of Data shows how correspondence analysis and related techniques enable the display of data in graphical form, which results in the verbalization of the structures in data. Renowned researchers in the field trace the history of these techniques and cover their current applications. The first part of the book explains the historical origins of correspondence analysis and associated methods. The second part concentrates on the contributions made by the school of Jean-Paul Benzécri and related movements, such as social space and geometric data analysis. Facets of Emotion
First published in 1988. We are presently witnessing a renaissance of research on emotion. In the last 10 years, an increasing number of empirical studies dealing with many different aspects of emotion has appeared. This monograph of research papers counteract the tendency toward dispersion and the lack of published work in this area. A major intent of this volume is to introduce a number of new methodological tools for research on emotion (for example, facet theory, non-metrical regression for patterns, voice resynthesis, and other methods) as well as to reassert the utility of some classical tools of social science research for studies of emotion (e.g., properly constructed questionnaires). In addition, it presents a number of theoretical notions that seem relevant to a systematic study of the emotion process (such as component process theory, a taxonomy of appraisal and coping dimensions, contextual and situational approaches, and inter-channel comparison). It is hoped that the results presented in this volume can serve as hypotheses for further work in this area. In the Appendix several sets of research materials are reprinted to encourage use in student research projects.
