In today’s globalized world, halal (meaning ‘permissible’ or ‘lawful’) is about more than food. Politics, power and ethics all play a role in the halal industry in setting new standards for production, trade, consumption and regulation. The question of how modern halal markets are constituted is increasingly important and complex. Written from a unique interdisciplinary global perspective, this book demonstrates that as the market for halal products and services is expanding and standardizing, it is also fraught with political, social and economic contestation and difference. The discussion is illustrated by rich ethnographic case studies from a range of contexts, and consideration is given to both Muslim majority and minority societies. Halal Matters will be of interest to students and scholars working across the humanities and social sciences, including anthropology, sociology and religious studies.

Tibetan Muslims

This book focuses on the minority of Tibetan Muslims among the Tibetan Diaspora. Most scholars remain unaware of the Tibetan Muslim community or its associations with Buddhism and the Dalai Lama. As a religious and political leader, he is the embodiment of Tibetan space, territory, population, religion, and identity. The Western public has assumed a monolithic vision of Tibet as a pure Buddhist Theocracy. However, Tibet was impacted by other religions, i.e. Christianity and Islam. The 1.000,000 Tibetan refugees in India are one of the largest Tibetan Diaspora; the majority are Buddhist, and the Muslim minority is estimated at no more than a few hundred families. Tibetan Muslims constitute a minority within another Tibetan Buddhist minority of exiled Tibetans in India. The study based on field research emphasizes a hybrid process of the Tibetan Muslim's Diaspora in exile. A cultural Buddhist Tibetan heritage associated with Kashmiri Muslim rituals and customs creates hybrid cultural practices and traditions, which could be characterized as rhizomatic.

The Price of Freedom

This is a significant book that investigates how the French internal resistance and external Free French movement were financed during the Second World War. It brings together the secretive financial aspects of resistance inside France with those under the control of the Free French movement in London. To date, there have been a number of studies that have followed the Gaullist movement, but none have studied how they were funded. This exploration also demonstrates the global scale of the war. It shows how the Free French were not simply a European, Atlantic-based movement, but were, in fact, colonial and operated on a global scale, shedding light on French relations with their colonies in A...

Ordinary Sudan, 1504-2019

This book starts from the premise that the study of "exceptionally normal" women and men - as conceived by microhistory - has radical implications for understanding history and politics, and applies this notion to Sudan. Against a historiography dominated by elite actors and international agents, it examines both how ordinary people have brought about the most important political shifts in the country's history (including the recent revolution in 2019) and how they have played a role in maintaining authoritarian regimes. It also explores how men and women have led their daily lives through a web of ordinary worries, desires and passions. The book includes contributions by historians, anthrop...

The Sun King at Sea

  • Categories: Art

This richly illustrated volume, the first devoted to maritime art and galley slavery in early modern France, shows how royal propagandists used the image and labor of enslaved Muslims to glorify Louis XIV. Mediterranean maritime art and the forced labor on which it depended were fundamental to the politics and propaganda of France’s King Louis XIV (r. 1643–1715). Yet most studies of French art in this period focus on Paris and Versailles, overlooking the presence or portrayal of galley slaves on the kingdom’s coasts. By examining a wide range of artistic productions—ship design, artillery sculpture, medals, paintings, and prints—Meredith Martin and Gillian Weiss uncover a vital asp...
