Beyond Rituals and Riots
This book, based on the Institute of Policy Studies' Ethnic Relations Project, aims to understand the current state and complexity of ethnic pluralism in Singapore, and to identify key trends and issues in various areas impacting ethnic pluralism and social cohesion. It also seeks to promote professional and public dialogue on important issues based on research findings and recommendations. In line with its aims, the book is problem- and policy-driven with a focus on policy implications and where policy meets culture, and each chapter concludes with general or specific policy recommendations towards improving ethnic relations and social cohesion. All the articles are based on empirical and scholarly research, employing multidisciplinary perspectives and a range of methodologies, and cover political history, legal-structural institutions, state policies, education, social services, media culture and community.
Gender Equality: The Time Has Come
Corinna Lim is the Institute of Policy Studies' 8th S R Nathan Fellow for the Study of Singapore. This book is an edited collection of her three IPS-Nathan Lectures, delivered in April and May 2021, and includes highlights of her question-and-answer segments with our virtual audience.Ms Lim examines the most pressing concerns facing women in Singapore, contributing her insights to the national gender equality review. She analyses why gender equality in the workplace and home has not advanced more despite Singapore's promising start in the 1960s with the introduction of the Women's Charter and gender-neutral education. She looks at what Singapore should do to accelerate gender equality, and tackles the issues of masculine norms that are harmful, support for family caregiving, and comprehensive sex education in Singapore.The IPS-Nathan Lecture series was launched in 2014 as part of the S R Nathan Fellowship for the Study of Singapore. It seeks to advance public understanding and discussion of issues of critical national interest for Singapore.
Singapore's Foreign Policy
The conventional understanding of Singapore's foreign policy can be summarized in three main propositions: first, it is dictated by the imperatives of being a small state; second, its primary purpose is to ensure Singapore's survival, given its small size; and third, this logic of survival dictates a realpolitik approach to foreign policy and national security.This book argues that an exclusively realist view of Singapore's foreign policy is inadequate. Singapore's foreign policy is also shaped by the positive effects of economic interdependence and regional institution-building ? instruments that realists tend to dismiss, but which Singapore has self-consciously tried to promote as instruments of regional order. The book first looks at the evolution of Singapore's foreign policy, before analyzing Singapore's international relations and national security in the context of economic growth and terrorism. It concludes with an interesting chapter on the impact of the rise of China and India on the regional landscape.
Building Resilient Neighbourhoods in Singapore
This book examines how institutional and environmental features in neighbourhoods can contribute to social resilience, highlighting the related socio-demographic issues, as well as the infrastructure, planning, design and policies issues. It is divided into three themes – infrastructure, planning, and community. Infrastructure examines how physical features such as parks and street patterns influence neighborliness and resilience, while planning studies how urban design enhances social interactions. Lastly, community discusses policies that can forge social bonds, either through racial integration, grassroots activities, or social service. Overall, the book combines research and empirical work with scholarly models of resilience and governance philosophy, focusing on Singapore’s urban planning and social policies.

Neoliberal Morality in Singapore
Using the case study of Singapore, this book examines the production of a set of institutionalized relationships and ethical meanings that link citizens to each other and the state. It looks at how questions of culture and morality are resolved, and how state-society relations are established that render paradoxes and inequalities acceptable, and form the basis of a national political culture. The Singapore government has put in place a number of policies to encourage marriage and boost fertility that has attracted much attention, and are often taken as evidence that the Singapore state is a social engineer. The book argues that these policies have largely failed to reverse demographic trends, and reveals that the effects of the policies are far more interesting and significant. As Singaporeans negotiate various rules and regulations, they form a set of ties to each other and to the state. These institutionalized relationships and shared meanings, referred to as neoliberal morality, render particular ideals about family natural. Based on extensive field work, the book is a useful contribution to studies on Asian Culture and Society, Globalisation, as well as Development Studies.
