Proceedings of the Critical Island Studies 2023 Conference (CISC 2023)
This is an open access book. The Critical Island Studies Consortium (CIS) was born in 2019 in Manila with the theme, “Critical Island Studies: The Islandic Archipelago, and Oceanic.” The CIS consortium aims at developing a new planetary perspective from which to invent an image of the environment and create a new sense of nature with which to seek environmental justice. This conference in Yogyakarta is composed of two related yet autonomous sections; one is hosted by Universitas Sanata Dharma (USD) and the other by Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). With USD and UGM taking the lead, CIS 2023 continues to carve out the vision of a new, more sustainable future for our planet.

Spatial Literary Studies in China
Spatial Literary Studies in China explores the range of vibrant and innovative research being done in China today. Chinese scholars have been exploring spatially oriented literary criticism in two different and mutually reinforcing directions: the first has focused on the study of Western literature, especially U.S. and European texts and theory, and the second has examined Chinese cultures, texts, and spaces. This collection of essays demonstrates Chinese scholars’ insightful interpretation, evaluation, and innovative application of international spatial analyses, theories, and methodologies, as well as their inspiring exploration and reconstruction of distinctively Chinese critical and theoretical discourses. For the first time in English, the essays in this volume demonstrate the vitality of literary geography, geocriticism, and the spatial humanities in China in the twenty-first century.
Narrating Nonhuman Spaces
Recent debates about the Anthropocene have prompted a re-negotiation of the relationship between human subjectivity and nonhuman matter within a wide range of disciplines. This collection builds on the assumption that our understanding of the nonhuman world is bound up with the experience of space: thinking about and with nonhuman spaces destabilizes human-scale assumptions. Literary form affords this kind of nonanthropocentric experience; one role of the critic in the Anthropocene is to foreground the function of space and description in challenging the conventional link between narrative and human (inter)subjectivity. Bringing together New Formalism, ecocriticism, and narrative theory, the included essays demonstrate that literature can transgress the strong and long-established boundary of the human frame that literary and narrative scholarship clings to. The focus is firmly on the contemporary but with strategic samplings in earlier cultural texts (the American transcendentalists, modernist fiction) that anticipate present-day anxieties about the nonhuman, while at the same time offering important conceptual tools for working through them.
