Bounded Rationality in Economics and Finance

The dominant hypothesis in mainstream economics is the assumption of prefect rationality. However, there are two dilemmas: Whenever this assumption was used empirical evidence turned out to be against it. Secondly, this assumption is far from reality, for example, because individuals usually do not possess all relevant information. Therefore, this volume addresses issues of bounded rationality in different areas. The first part investigates bounded rationality in financial markets, the second part investigates the effects of bounded rationality on industrial organizations and the third part deals with bounded rationality in price theory, environmental economics and public management.

Personality and Cognition in Economic Decision Making

Psychologists studying cognitive processes and personality have increasingly benefited from the wealth of theory, methodology, and decision making paradigms used in economics and game theory. Similarly, for the economists, personality traits and basic cognitive processes offer a set of coherent explanatory constructs in economic behavior. Given the debate on preference invariance and behavioral consistency across contexts and domains, the papers in this topic shed light on the existence and effect of stable sets of idiosyncratic features on economic decision-making. While the effects of personality and cognition on economic decisions remain under-explored, the papers contributed in this topic offer more than a stimulus for further research. The general message could be that personality and cognitive processes offer the stable idiosyncratic ground on which individual decisions are made.

The Performance of Socially Responsible Investment Funds in Europe

Socially responsible investing (SRI) is an investment approach that combines investors’ financial as well as nonfinancial goals in the security selection process. Technically, investors can engage in SRI either by directly investing in companies that implement corporate social activities or by investing their money in SRI funds, which apply screening criteria to select securities. The screening process applied by the SRI funds has led to controversy among academics regarding whether the use of SRI screens in the security selection process influences the financial performance of the funds. The empirical study analyzes whether or not the screening process applied by such funds influences the...

Economists, most from Spain, offer 14 literature reviews and research reports reflecting efforts by mainstream economic thought to include among its chief concerns the study of complex interactions between economies and natural space, and the study of the complex phenomenon of individual and collective decision-making when faced with problems linking economic activity to the environment. After an introductory paper, they cover methodological issues, environmental economic theory, applications, and experiments in simulated ecological systems. The anthology could serve as a graduate text in environmental economics. It is not indexed. Distributed in N. America by Computational Mechanics. The first reference on rationality that integrates accounts from psychology and philosophy, covering descriptive and normative theories from both disciplines. Both analytic philosophy and cognitive psychology have made dramatic advances in understanding rationality, but there has been little interaction between the disciplines. This volume offers the first integrated overview of the state of the art in the psychology and philosophy of rationality. Written by leading experts from both disciplines, The Handbook of Rationality covers the main normative and descriptive theories of rationality—how people ought to think, how they actually think, and why we often deviate from what we can call rat...
