Cabré (1998) considera que toda atividade terminológica se justifica socialmente por sua utilidade em relação à solução de problemas relacionados à informação e à comunicação. Parte-se então da convicção de que a importância social da Terminologia está enfatizada pelas características da sociedade contemporânea, marcada pela extensão do conhecimento especializado e pelo plurilinguísmo necessário a uma globalização comunicacional eficaz.

Ainda, podem ser entendidas como um conjunto de recursos tecnológicos integrados entre si, que proporcionam, por meio das funções de hardware, software e telecomunicações, a automação e comunicação dos processos de negócios, da pesquisa científica e de ensino e aprendizagem.
