Part archive and part guidebook, The Photographer's Green Book's inaugural publication, Vol. 1, explores the themes of history, community, and process in photography. It explores these themes through essays, interviews from artists and organizations, and images from diverse lens based artists. The book also features questions and organization listings to help readers further engage with these concepts.
A century after a devastating volcanic eruption forced Iceland's inhabitants to abandon its shores, the island is enshrouded in legend. Fishermen tell tales of giant trolls guarding the land, and of seductive witches who steal men's hearts. But the truth behind the legends is mechanical, not magic.
This volume focuses on the reconstruction of past ecosystems and provides a comprehensive review of current techniques and their application in exemplar studies. The 18 chapters address a wide variety of topics that span vertebrate paleobiology and paleoecology (body mass, postcranial functional morphology, evolutionary dental morphology, microwear and mesowear, ecomorphology, mammal community structure analysis), contextual paleoenvironmental studies (paleosols and sedimentology, ichnofossils, pollen, phytoliths, plant macrofossils), and special techniques (bone microstructure, biomineral isotopes, inorganic isotopes, 3-D morphometrics, and ecometric modeling). A final chapter discusses how to integrate results of these studies with taphonomic data in order to more accurately characterize an ancient ecosystem. Current investigators, advanced undergraduates, and graduate students interested in the field of paleoecology will find this book immensely useful. The length and structure of the volume also makes it suitable for teaching a college-level course on reconstructing Cenozoic ecosystems.
Several data banks around the world are accumulating DNA sequences at a feverish rate, with tremendous potential for furthering our knowledge of how biological systems code and pass on information. The sophisticated mathematical analysis of that data is just beginning. The Eighteenth Annual Symposium on Some Mathematical Questions in Biology was held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the AAAS and brought together speakers knowledgeable in both biology and mathematics to discuss these developments and to emphasize the need for rigorous, efficient computational tools. These computational tools include biologically relevant definitions of sequence similarity and string matching algorithms. The solutions for some of these problems have great generality; the string matching methods first developed for biological sequences have now been applied to areas such as geology, linguistics, and speech recognition. There is a great potential here for creating of new mathematics to handle this growing data base, with new applications for many areas of mathematics, computer science, and statistics.
Now with a bonus second CD that contains individual ii/V7/I tracks for each major key (17 new practice tracks). The most important musical sequence in modern jazz Contains all the needed scales and chords to each CD track and all are written in the staff. Contains 120 written patterns (transposed for all instruments) and three full pages of piano voicings that correspond to the CD. Contains a Scale Syllabus which allows you to find and use various substitute scales---just like professional musicians. The CD contains four tracks of Jamey playing exercises in a "call and response" fashion over an extended ii/V7/I progression that stays in one key at a comfortable tempo. Allows you to practice major, minor, dom. 7th, diminished, whole tone, half-diminished, Lydian, and dim. whole tone scales and chords. Beginning/Intermediate level. Suggested prerequisites: Volumes 1 and 2. Titles: ii/V7/I All Major Keys * G Minor Blues * Bebop Tune * V7+9/I All Keys * ii/V7/I in Three Keys * F Blues with 8-Bar Bridge * II/V7 Random Progressions * ii /V7+9/I All Minor Keys.
