A novel that takes place in the Balearic Islands (Mallorca and Ibiza), the protagonist of this story is Jaime Febrer, the heir of a Mallorcan family of high birth and flowery lineage, which is completely ruined. He has been in charge of squandering the meager inheritance he received and has to find a solution that prevents the good reputation enjoyed by the Febrer on the island from being shattered. The only possible solution is to agree to a good marriage with an heiress who longs for the reputation of the Febrer name and who can fill the coffers of this family.
Vicente Blasco Ibanez, a luminary in Spanish literature, crafted a compelling narrative in his masterwork, "The Dead Command”. Set in opposition to the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution, "The Dead Command" unfolds as a riveting exploration of power, morality, and the outcomes of wielding authority. Ibanez, known for his realist and socially conscious writing, intricately weaves a story that delves into the psychological complexities of General Guadalupe Arroyo, a charismatic but ruthless navy leader grappling with the demanding situations of struggle. The novel gives a nuanced portrayal of characters navigating the cruel realities of struggle, supplying readers with a glimpse into the moral dilemmas confronted via the ones in positions of power. Ibanez evocative prose and vivid descriptions create a wealthy tapestry that immerses readers within the turbulent landscape of Mexican history. "The Dead Command" stands as a testomony to Ibanez ability to capture the essence of human nature amidst historical turmoil.
David Glasgow Farragut, the Civil War icon and Americas first four-star admiral, had a family worthy of fiction. The main character -- those who influenced him most -- were heroes themselves in their day: In the American Revolution, it was George, this Spanish immigrant father; in the War of 1812, David Porter, both his foster father and commander; and in the Civil War, David Dixon Porter, his adopted brother and naval partner. This book tells how Farraguts hero-relatives impacted him at successive stages in his growth and career. A kind of family album in text and illustration, the book begins with details of Farraguts Spanish and Irish ancestry. It concludes with a profile of his son, Loyall, his chosen biographer, who along with the admirals wife, Virginia, became guardians of his legacy when he passed.
