Engineered Interfaces in Fiber Reinforced Composites

  • Type: Book

  • Publisher: Elsevier

The study and application of composite materials are a truly interdisciplinary endeavour that has been enriched by contributions from chemistry, physics, materials science, mechanics and manufacturing engineering. The understanding of the interface (or interphase) in composites is the central point of this interdisciplinary effort. From the early development of composite materials of various nature, the optimization of the interface has been of major importance. While there are many reference books available on composite materials, few of them deal specifically with the science and mechanics of the interface of fiber reinforced composites. Further, many recent advances devoted solely to rese...

Additive Manufacturing of Structural Electronics

Additive Manufacturing of Structural Electronics

Additive manufacturing, also called rapid prototyping or 3D printing is a disruptive manufacturing technique with a significant impact in electronics. With 3D printing, bulk objects with circuitry are embedded in the volume of an element or conformally coated on the surface of existing parts, allowing design and manufacturing of smaller and lighter products with fast customisation. The book covers both materials selection and techniques. The scope also covers the research areas of additive manufacturing of passive and active components, sensors, energy storage, bioelectronics and more.

Microstructure and Properties of Materials

Microstructure and Properties of Materials

This is an advanced text on the microstructure and properties of materials, the first volume of a possible 3-volume set. While there are many elementary texts in materials science, there are very few advanced texts. Chapter 1 on aluminum alloys presents microstructural optimization and critical considerations in design applications. Chapter 2 on Nickel-base superalloys reviews the compositional, microstructural and processing advances in increasing their maximum use temperature. Chapter 3 on metal matrix composites discusses the strengthening mechanisms of metals dispersed with short fibers or particles. Chapter 4 on polymer matrix composites contains the details of the microsturcture proper...

Discovered in the twentieth century, carbon nanotubes (CNT) were an integral part of science and industry by the beginning of the twenty first century, revolutionizing chemistry, physics, and materials science. More recent advances in carbon nanotube production methods have resulted in a tremendous push to incorporate CNTs into polymer matrices. Al

FRC 2000 - Composites for the Millennium

This book presents the proceeding of the 8th in this successful series of conferences organised by the Centre for Composite Materials Engineering of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and sponsored by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (ImechE) and The Institute of Materials (IoM). The papers presented show how FRCs are being used in a steadily increasing range of technologies and how their properties make them appropriate choices for designers and processors interested in exploiting the potential of these highly versatile materials. Composites applications now extend well beyond their established uses in aerospace, marine and land transport and, although exciting developments are still taking place in these fields, it is the rapidly expanding range of civil engineering and infrastructure applications which offers the greatest potential for novel uses. FRC's high strength, light weight and durability make them appropriate for large scale structures and, as these proceedings demonstrate, they are increasingly being specified as an advantageous alternative to more traditional materials.

Graphene for Transparent Conductors

This book provides a systematic presentation of the principles and practices behind the synthesis and functionalization of graphene and grapheme oxide (GO), as well as the fabrication techniques for transparent conductors from these materials. Transparent conductors are used in a wide variety of photoelectronic and photovoltaic devices, such as liquid crystal displays (LCDs), solar cells, optical communication devices, and solid-state lighting. Thin films made from indium tin oxide (ITO) have thus far been the dominant source of transparent conductors, and now account for 50% of indium consumption. However, the price of Indium has increased 1000% in the last 10 years. Graphene, a two-dimensi...

Impact Response and Dynamic Failure of Composites and Laminate Materials

Impact Response and Dynamic Failure of Composites and Laminate Materials

In many engineering applications of composite and laminate materials, damage and failure can be caused by impact of various types. Low-velocity impact is potentially dangerous because it can produce extensive sub-surface delamination that may not be visible on the surface. High-velocity impact produced by projectiles, shock waves and fragments from exploding ammunition is a highly dynamic event, leading to the penetration or perforation of composites. All impact damage is detrimental to the mechanical and structural performance of composites. Accurate evaluation of the damaged state, and a fundamental understanding of the effect of damage upon the resultant properties are therefore essential for the proper design and application of composite materials. The strain-rate dependence of material behavior, fracture propagation and energy-absorbing capacity are also of paramount importance from both the materials science and structural mechanics perspectives.
