Restoring Functional Behaviors After Traumatic Peripheral Nerve Injuries

Peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) by trauma are the most common neuronal injury in civilian and military populations and significantly burden health care systems. Mammals (including humans) with PNIs experience: (1) immediate loss of sensory and motor functions mediated by the denervated target tissues; (2) rapid (3-7d) Wallerian Degeneration (WD) of severed distal axonal segments; and, (3) slow (~1mm/day) regeneration by naturally occurring axonal outgrowths from surviving, severed proximal stumps that produce poor (if any) functional recovery because of slow axonal regeneration for long distances and lack of axonal guidance. Denervated muscle fibers and sensory organs often atrophy before any re-innervation can occur.

Electrofluidodynamic Technologies (EFDTs) for Biomaterials and Medical Devices

Electrofluidodynamic Technologies (EFDTs) for Biomaterials and Medical Devices: Principles and Advances focuses on the fundamentals of EFDTs - namely electrospinning, electrospraying and electrodynamic atomization - to develop active platforms made of synthetic or natural polymers for use in tissue engineering, restoration and therapeutic treatments. The first part of this book deals with main technological aspects of EFDTs, such as basic technologies and the role of process parameters. The second part addresses applications of EFDTs in biomedical fields, with chapters on their application in tissue engineering, molecular delivery and implantable devices. This book is a valuable resource for materials scientists, biomedical engineers and clinicians alike. Presents a complete picture of Electrofluidodynamic technologies and their use in biomedicine Provides a comprehensive, professional reference on the subject, covering materials processing, fabrication and the use of novel devices for tissue engineering and therapeutics Focuses on technological advances, with an emphasis on studies and clinical trials

Music was everywhere in pre-Revolutionary Williamsburg, Virginia. In 1771, plantation owner Landon Carter noted in his diary that he could hear instruments through the windows of every house in town. In taverns and private homes, at formal performances and dances and casually around the campfire, music filled the daily lives of the people of Williamsburg. While the average citizen enjoyed music during public events, the city's elite, emulating their British counterparts, spent lavishly on instruments, sheet music and private lessons and held private concerts and dances. Williamsburg's theater, the first of its kind in America, provided a venue for all Virginians and brought numerous musical acts to the stage. Drawing on contemporary newspaper accounts, this book is the first to explore how some 18th-century Williamsburg citizens experienced the growing musical world around them.

From Puritan to Yankee

The years from 1690 to 1765 in America have usually been considered a waiting period before the Revolution. Mr. Bushman, in his penetrating study of colonial Connecticut, takes another view. He shows how, during these years, economic ambition and religious ferment profoundly altered the structure of Puritan society, enlarging the bounds of liberty and inspiring resistance to established authority. This is an investigation of the strains that accompanied the growth of liberty in an authoritarian society. Mr. Bushman traces the deterioration of Puritan social institutions and the consequences for human character. He does this by focusing on day-to-day life in Connecticut--on the farms, in the ...
