Transnational Histories of the 'Royal Nation'
This book challenges existing accounts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in which political developments are explained in terms of the rise of the nation-state. While monarchies are often portrayed as old-fashioned – as things of the past – we argue that modern monarchies have been at the centre of nation-construction in many parts of the world. Today, roughly a quarter of states define themselves as monarchies as well as nation-states – they are Royal Nations. This is a global phenomenon. This volume interrogates the relationship between royals and ‘their’ nations with transnational case studies from Asia, Africa, Europe as well as South America. The seventeen contributors discuss concepts and structures, visual and performative representations, and memory cultures of modern monarchies in relation to rising nationalist movements. This book thereby analyses the worldwide significance of the Royal Nation.
Jews and Muslims Made Visible in Christian Iberia and Beyond, 14th to 18th Centuries
This volume aims to show through various case studies how the interrelations between Jews, Muslims and Christians in Iberia were negotiated in the field of images, objects and architecture during the Later Middle Ages and Early Modernity. . By looking at the ways pre-modern Iberians envisioned diversity, we can reconstruct several stories, frequently interwoven with devotional literature, poetry or Inquisitorial trials, and usually quite different from a binary story of simple opposition. The book’s point of departure narrates the relationship between images and conversions, analysing the mechanisms of hybridity, and proposing a new explanation for the representation of otherness as the complex outcome of a negotiation involving integration. Spain, Europe and the Atlantic
The idea of a dialogue - sometimes harmonious, sometimes divisive - between the centre and periphery of the early modern European state stands at the heart of much of John Elliott's historical writing. It is the fulcrum around which his Imperial Spain revolves, and it lies at the heart of his analysis of the causes of the revolt of the Catalans against the centralising policies of the Madrid government. His writings on the Americas, such as The Old World and the New, likewise stressed the relationship between centre and periphery. This collection of essays by a group of Elliott's former students examines different aspects of this important theme and develops them. Taken together with the 'personal appreciation' of Elliott (Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford), it forms an important examination of the work of the greatest living historian of Spain as well as a major contribution to early modern European history.

En aquest volum doble s'han publicat les ponències i intervencions (tret d'algunes excepcions per causes alienes als editors) de les edicions sisena i setena dels cursos Memòria de la Transició a Espanya i a Catalunya que, des de l'any 1999, organitzem el Centre d'Estudis Històrics Internacionals en col·laboració amb la Generalitat de Catalunya i diverses entitats. L'any 2004 el curs duia el títol "Educació, cultura i política" i es va desenvolupar al Col·legi Oficial de Doctors i Llicenciats en Filosofia i Lletres i en Ciències de Catalunya. L'any 2005 el títol ha estat "L'Administració de justícia i la Transició política" i ha tingut lloc a les dependències del Centre d'Estudis Jurídics i Formació Especialitzada, dependent del Departament de Justícia de la Generalitat de Catalunya.
