Identifications of French People of Algerian Origin
This book is an innovative presentation of the way in which the descendants of Muslim immigrants from Algeria in France perceive and deal with multiple social identifications. Against the background of the theory and methodology (such as Saussure's sign theory, Znaniecki's sociology, and Brubaker and Cooper's concepts), Kubera offers a new analysis into identity in a multicultural society. The book revolves around a combination of the modernist and post-modernist paradigms: highlighting both the constant and situational aspects of social identity. By focusing on identifications, the author shows how to overcome the problem of "intangibility" of identity in research practice. Touching on colonialism, gender, religion, migration, and racism, this will be an important contribution to students and scholars across sociology, anthropology, political science, law, and international relations.
Islamic Schools in France
This book, the first on the growing phenomenon of private full-time K-12 Muslim schools in France, investigates whether these schools participate in the communautarisme (or ethnic/cultural separatism) that Muslims are often accused of or if their founding is a sign of integration, given that most of private education in France is subsidized by the government. Is Islam compatible with the West? This study proposes an answer to this question through the lens of Muslim education in France, adding to our understanding of the so-called resurgence of religion following the demise of the secularization theory and shedding new light on religion’s place in the West and of Islam in diasporic contexts.
Chroniques de l'ethnicité quotidienne chez les maghrébins français
Du premier immigrant nord-africain en passant par le Beur, un processus d'ethnicisation s'est progressivement déroulé pour arriver aujourd'hui à la constitution dans le paysage national français du groupe des Maghrébins. A l'aide de questionnaires, d'entretiens semi-directifs de recherche et des observations ethnographiques, l'auteur montre comment s'est constitué un groupe ethnicisé dont l'identité se conjugue au pluriel et cache derrière une homogénéité apparente une relative hétérogénéité de pratiques et de profils identitaires.

Le terme “Service” a orienté les travaux de recherche et de formation lors du XIIIème Congrès de l'Association Internationale de Formation et de Recherche en Education Familiale (AIFREF). Il s'agissait, en l'occurrence, de se mettre au service de la petite enfance. L'acte qui consiste à se consacrer au service d'un être qui chemine sur la voie de l'autonomie a pris une consistance et une importance sans cesse croissantes au cours du développement de la modernité. Aujourd'hui, celle-ci connaît une profonde mutation : entrant dans la postmodernité, nous constatons que la notion de service prend un tout autre sens. Pour mieux être au service de l'enfance, il s'agit maintenant de savoir ce qui peut lui être utile. Qu'est-ce qui permet à l'enfant de grandir et de s'émanciper? Et, dès lors, quels services convient-il de rendre à l'enfance? Quelles sont la relevance, l'efficience, l'efficacité et la durabilité de ces services délibérément conçus et opérationnalisés? Ces questions ont fait l'objet d'une mise en examen et ont orienté les travaux du XIIIème Congrès de l'AIFREF.

Le bien-être au prisme des violences scolaires
The school, a reflection of a nation's values and moral standards, is faced with well-being challenges. Through a selection of articles from presentations given within the framework of the Working Group (GT11, which became CR40 in 2022) of the 21st International Congress of the International Association of French-speaking Sociologists (AISLF) held in 2021 in Tunis, this book discusses the school environment, discrimination, and the influence of norms on educational actors. Organized into three parts, it addresses public policies, recognition as a factor of well-being/distress, and interpersonal relationships. The multidisciplinary studies question reductive dogmas and examine school violence from various perspectives. This book illuminates the challenges faced by school and university actors regarding norms, discrimination, and diversity, and offers ideas for a more inclusive and compassionate education.
