Journey Into the Heart of Bipolarity

This is both a book on art and a psychiatric manual and at the same time it is neither. It takes a radically different approach by setting out to describe subjective viewpoints: those of works of art, those of patients and those of the reader. The aim is to achieve an understanding of the psychological world of bipolar patients through a subtle interplay of connections between the subjectivity of those three protagonists. Subjectivity also prevailed in the authors' choices: which clinical aspects of bipolarity to present, and which works of art to select. So far from setting out to be exhaustive and definitive, the book proposes a number of openings. Doctors will view these openings differen...

The Bath Fugues

From one of Australia's most lauded writers, comes a wonderfully wrought work, melding intrigue, romance, comedy and deception. A melancholy sadness which courts by never surrenders to depair. Taking the form of three interwoven novellas: the first centred on an aging art forger; the second on a Portuguese poet, opium addict and art collector, the third on a mysteriously well connected doctor who has built an art gallery in tropical Queensland. A must for all good bookstores.

Ovid's Art and the Wife of Bath

Ovid's Art and the Wife of Bath

Ovid's Art and the Wife of Bath examines how Ovid's Ars amatoria shaped the erotic discourses of the medieval West. The Ars amatoria circulated in medieval France and England as an authoritative treatise on desire; consequently, the sexualities of the medieval West are haunted by the imperial Roman constructions of desire that emerge from Ovid's text. The Ars amatoria ironically proposes the erotic potential of violence, and this aspect of the Ars proved to be enormously influential. Ovid's discourse on erotic violence provides a script for Heloise's epistolary expression of desire for Abelard. The Roman de la Rose extends the directives of the Ars with a rhetorical flourish and poetic exces...

Peter Weiss (1916-1982) was virtually unknown in the mid-1960s when Peter Brook made Marat/Sade into a film. The weaving of time, space, plot, real-and-imagined characters, sexual liberation, and surrealist imagery made Marat/Sade a sensation. Little did audiences realize that this counterculture classic was written by a German Jew. At that time, Weiss was also at work on a play about Auschwitz: The Investigation. These two dramas are in this volume along with The Shadow of the Body of the Coachman. All are cogently introduced and edited by Robert Cohen.

Groups St Andrews 1997 in Bath: Volume 2

This two-volume book contains selected papers from the international conference "Groups St. Andrews 1997 in Bath". The articles are arranged in roughly alphabetical order and cover a wide spectrum of modern group theory. There are articles based on lecture courses given by five main speakers together with refereed survey and research articles contributed by other conference participants. Proceedings of earlier "Groups St. Andrews" conferences have had a major impact on the development of group theory and these volumes should be equally important.

Lead-Free Soldering

The worldwide trend toward lead-free components and soldering is especially urgent in the European Union with the implementation strict new standards in July 2006, and with pending implementation of laws in China and California. This book provides a standard reference guide for engineers who must meet the new regulations, including a broad collection of techniques for lead-free soldering design and manufacture, which up to now have been scattered in difficult-to-find scholarly sources.
