Leading figures at the dawn of the sixteenth-century Reformation commonly faced the charge of “judaizing”: 72 In His Name concerns the changing views of four such men starting with their kabbalistic treatment of the 72 divine names of angels. Johann Reuchlin, the first of the four men featured in this book, survived the charge; Martin Luther’s increasingly anti-semitic stance is contrasted with the opposite movement of the French Franciscan Jean Thenaud whose kabbalistic manuscripts were devoted to Francis I; Philipp Wolff, the fourth, had been born into a Jewish family but his recorded views were decidedly anti-semitic. 72 In His Name also includes evidence that kabbalistic beliefs and practices, such as the service for exorcism recorded by Thenaud, were unwittingly recorded by Christians. Le Dieu Néant. Théologies Négatives à l'Aube des Temps Modernes is a study of the diverse intellectual possibilities presented to Medieval and Renaissance intellectuals by the negative theology of pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite. It deals specifically with the ontological, epistemological and semiotic aspects of interpretations of Dionysian philosophy developed by such thinkers as Thomas Aquinas, Ficino, Cusanus and Bovelles. It also attempts to differentiate between the negative theology specific to Dionysius, and those elements of negative thinking peculiar to Hermetism and the Christian Cabala. This analysis of negative theology sheds new light on the differences between major intellectual currents of European philosophy (scholasticism, Italian Neoplatonism, German and French mysticism, occultism), while introducing useful distinctions into the history of the Dionysian tradition itself.
Erasmus was not only one of the most widely read authors of the early modern period, but one of the most controversial. For some readers he represented the perfect humanist scholar; for others, he was an arrogant hypercritic, a Lutheran heretic and polemicist, a virtuoso writer and rhetorician, an inventor of a new, authentic Latin style, etc. In the present volume, a number of aspects of Erasmus’s manifold reception are discussed, especially lesser-known ones, such as his reception in Neo-Latin poetry.
