Beyond Catalina
During any season the tracks of so called "Yachties" can be traced all around the Pacific Ocean. "Beyond Catalina" is the story of one sailor who left his comfort zone behind in a quest for excitement and adventure at sea. He set out during the 1970s, prior to the advent of the digital age, thereby being numbered amongst the last generation of sailors to rely on sextant, chronometer and complex tables. "Out there", he and a variety of crew members discovered rich rewards. But for these they had to pay "the price of admission" in terms of gruelling passages, times of sheer terror and even bouts of "cabin fever". The story is documented candidly, and often with a spark of humour. By his own admission the Author if often out of his depth. But then, on a 32-foot yacht nothing could have prepared him for a "freak wave breeding ground" or marauding "greybeards" from the mighty Southern Ocean.

A Series of Regenerations in a Charmed Life
As a book, 'A Series of Regenerations in a Charmed Life' fits somewhere between a coherent novel and a collection of short stories spread over the lifetime of the narrator. As such, it also represents a biography, albeit one wherein the central character seems to change from story to story, to the extent that he becomes barely recognisable, and often seems to vanish during a series of "regenerations." Readers are given insights into the sometimes strange life of a the narrator who, as an infant, survived the 'Blitz" of London. They are next transported in turn through several 'time leaps' to post World War II South Africa at the height of the shocking apartheid regime, the life of an immigrant 'rocket scientist" in California and Florida during the exciting 1960s 'Space Race', the life of an adventurer a during 1000s of miles cruising the great Pacific Ocean on board a 32-foot cutter; and ultimately the onset of old age. The stories may also be read separately and in any order, serving as glimpses into lives and times of colourful and often bizzarre characters in equally strange worlds.

The Lloyd’s Register of Yachts was first issued in 1878, and was issued annually until 1980, except during the years 1916-18 and 1940-46. Two supplements containing additions and corrections were also issued annually.
