Houses of Life

Jewish cemeteries are called Houses of Life for good reason. This book shows how burial grounds across Europe reflect the ways that specific Jewish communities have lived and continue to live. Thirty cemeteries are profiled, starting with the Roman era, running through Islamic Spain and medieval Italy to baroque and 19th-century Germany, and ending in present-day Britain and France. Each cemetery is illustrated with historical and current plans, maps, paintings, drawings, and photographs of both the cemeteries and the communities they have served.

A Field Guide to Visiting a Jewish Cemetery

A Field Guide to Visiting a Jewish Cemetery clearly offers something missing in Jewish genealogical research: a good book on understanding the ways of Jewish cemeteries and how to interpret the Hebrew inscriptions on tombstones. The fact that tombstone inscriptions are in Hebrew can be a challenge to some researchers. But the material presented in the book is simple enough that it can be understood by those with the most minimal exposure to Hebrew. Yet it is comprehensive enough to be a valuable resource to the most sophisticated Jewish readers. It has a dictionary of Hebrew words found on tombstones but also includes common expressions that appear. The carving of a tombstone can be expensive and sometimes Hebrew expressions are represented in abbreviated form. An appendix shows commonly used abbreviations.

The Destruction of Jewish Cemeteries in Poland

The Destruction of Jewish Cemeteries in Poland offers a comprehensive examination of the history of Jewish cemeteries in Poland, shedding light on an overlooked aspect of Holocaust history. Beginning with the settlement of Jewish communities in Poland, the book covers the establishment and subsequent destruction of over 1,200 Jewish cemeteries within the country's present borders. Krzysztof Bielawski draws on meticulous research and firsthand experience to explore the complex dynamics behind the destruction, exposing the roles played by various actors. Through a detailed analysis of texts, iconographic sources, and archival materials, the book not only documents the destruction but also seeks to identify the perpetrators, challenging common misconceptions and offering a nuanced perspective on this dark chapter in history. Der jüdische Friedhof bei Binswangen / The Jewish Cemetery at Binswangen

A Data-Driven Analysis of Cemeteries and Social Reform in Paris, 1804–1924

  • Categories: Art

This book takes a novel, data-driven approach to the cemeteries of Paris, analyzing a largely text-based body of archival material as proxy evidence for visual material that has been lost due to systematic, and legally sanctioned, acts of erasure. This study represents the first full-length study of vernacular monuments in France and the entrepreneurs who made them. It also provides methodical considerations, at the intersection of the computational and digital humanities for managing survival biases in extant historical evidence, that are applicable beyond the thematic focus of this book. Since extant examples of these more inconspicuous monuments are rare, this project employs both distant and close viewing—analyzing commercial almanacs, work logs, and burial records in aggregates alongside detailed case studies—to compensate for gaps in the material record. The book will be of interest to scholars working in visual culture, popular culture, digital humanities, and French history.
