Usually, that Wonderful Invention won't work, actually. But there's another possibility, too.... The workshop-laboratory was a mess. Sam Bending looked it over silently; his jaw muscles were hard and tense, and his eyes were the same. To repeat what Sam Bending thought when he saw the junk that had been made of thousands of dollars worth of equipment would not be inadmissible in a family magazine, because Bending was not particularly addicted to fou...

The ability to find and remove barriers between people and their systems in R&D can almost guarantee a doubling in performance, and often delivers multiples of that. R&D teams that have smooth handoffs deliver 100 percent of the required knowledge at those handoffs. As a result, such teams do not lose critical information, have unexpected knowledge gaps appear in their projects, or have uncoordinated knowledge transfers that waste minutes, days, and even months every year. Creating a Lean R&D System: Lean Principles and Approaches for Pharmaceutical and Research-Based Organizations lays out the logic of why Lean implementation isn’t strictly for manufacturing and describes why it can be ju...

Specifications were finalized on March 15, 1940; the airfoil prototype was complete on September 9; and the aircraft made its maiden flight on October 26. Now that is a lean development process!" —Allen Ward and Durward Sobek, commenting on the development of the P-51 Mustang and its exemplary use of trade-off curves. Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award recipient, 2008 Despite attempts to interpret and apply lean product development techniques, companies still struggle with design quality problems, long lead times, and high development costs. Thomas A. Lambie

Dr. Thomas A. Lambie was called a “loose cannon” by his Presbyterian missionary colleagues in British Sudan in 1907 because of his energy, vision, and spiritual fervor. Through combined gifts of diplomacy and medical prowess, Lambie, together with two missionary colleagues, launched the Sudan Interior Mission in Ethiopia in 1927. The goal of this enterprise was to evangelize the primal religionists of southern Ethiopia. During ten years of pioneering mission efforts by Lambie and nearly one hundred SIM cohorts, a young church of nearly fifty baptized believers was formed. The missionaries were then evicted from Ethiopia by the invading Italians in 1936. This modest beginning became the foundation for what is today the vibrant Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church, the largest evangelical denomination in Ethiopia.
